Science & Mathematics Seminar
Wednesday, September 11
3:00pm - 4:00pm
Refreshments at 2:45pm
Student Union, Cooley Ballroom C
Title: Mathematical Modeling and Theory in Biology and Epidemiology
Speaker:
Professor Yun Kang
Science and Mathematics Faculty
School of Letters and Sciences
Arizona State University
Abstract:
Modern biology and epidemiology have become more and more driven by the need for mathematical and quantitative methods to elucidate general phenomena arising from the complexity of interactions on the numerous spatial, temporal, and hierarchical scales at which biological systems operate and diseases spread. In this talk, I will present how my recent work has been addressing mathematical questions raised by important biological questions, such as (1) What are the mechanisms of species coexistence; (2) What is the role of dispersals in shaping community structures when a species is subject to Allee effects and disease; (3) How do social insects such as ants operate their complicated societies without central control, and how my recent research has been developing the mathematical machinery needed to do so.
About the Speaker:
Dr. Kang joined ASU as an assistant professor in August 2008 right after completing her Ph.D. in mathematics from the School of Mathematics and Statistics, ASU, Tempe. Her main areas of study are Dynamical Systems and Mathematical Biology, which consist of both theoretical and modeling components.

Internship this Semester? Show it on Your Transcript!
There are two ways to list an internship as an honors course on your transcript: Register for HON 484 and attend a class for credit, or register for HON 484 for zero credits.
Why should I sign up for zero credits for HON 484?
*You can have a record of an Honors internship on your transcript.
*You cannot take HON 484 for credit because the class is full, there is a time conflict, or are not interested in the extra work required for credit.
*Enrollment requirements:
*Minimum of 15 credits
*Participate in a legitimate internship experience
*Complete paperwork *Caveat: Students will be administratively withdrawn if they fall below 15 credits during the semester. **Note: Students can enroll in this any time throughout the semester. ***Contact Lianne.Russo@asu.edu for paperwork.
