Title: Human Influences on Species Interactions in Urban Communities: Insights from the LTER and ULTRA-Ex Networks

Speaker:

Dr. Paige Warren

Department of Environmental Conservation

University of Massachusetts-Amherst

Abstract:

As the pattern of reduced diversity and increased abundance associated with urbanization has crystallized in recent years, competing explanations for the patterns have emerged, some focusing on colonization/extinction dynamics and others focusing on the role of species interactions, such as competition. There is also a pressing need to address the evolutionary implications of urbanization, from effects on trait evolution to speciation. I present examples of altered species interactions and evidence of
underlying human drivers from five cities: Baltimore, Boston, Fresno, Phoenix, and Raleigh-Durham. Documented effects of urbanization include: reduction in perceived predation risk by passerine birds,
elevated apparent competition between synanthropic species and specialists in birds, and elevated floral antagonisms for a forest plant. Humans represent a major force in the spatial structuring of resources in metropolitan regions. The consequences may be profound, with implications ranging from foraging behavior to animal communication to natural selection on native plant traits.

HON394HON 394:  Technological Disasters  (Fall 2013 - 78600)

Fall 2013

Wednesdays, 4:30-7:15 pm

Polytechnic Campus

This seminar is an interdisciplinary examination of the human, organizational and technical factors contributing to the causes and impacts of major technological accidents.  While many catastrophes seem to have a simple explanation (e.g., "operator error" or "mechanical failure") most involve a complex and tightly coupled array of failures in socio-technical systems.  Similarly, the impacts of these events have far reaching and often long lasting impacts on humans, the environment, and social institutions.

Past catastrophes to be considered include the Bhopal, India chemical leak, the space shuttle Challenger and Columbia explosions, the ValuJet airline crash in the Florida Everglades, the Three Mile Island and Chernobyl nuclear accidents, and the Exxon Valdez oil spill. Contemporary cases include a focus on the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and the Fukushima nuclear disaster.  In addition, students will have the opportunity to research other cases and present them to the class.

Other topics include an examination of risk assessment and differences in expert and public perception of risk, as well as consideration of options for living (or not) with complex technological systems.
