Each member who attends will receive one wristband good for the school carnival the next evening! Not a member? Join here. Looking forward to seeing you there!! |
A WORLD OF FUN ARRIVES FRIDAY!
The Horace Mann PTSA is proud to present the 2nd Annual World of Fun Carnival - a combination of International Night and a Year-End Celebration Carnival and this year we are adding in Art Night as a special guest! Because this is such a large event, the parking lot will be closed immediately after school Friday in order to set up for the carnival. There will be street parking in neighborhoods (as always, we ask you to be respectful of residents) and the LDS Church on 172nd Ave NE is allowing us to utilize their parking lot for the event as well.
We are still in need of volunteers - the more we have, the better the event will be! Please sign up here.
There will be so many fun games, activities and more at the World of Fun - including food! All games, activities and food sales will be conducted through tickets and wristbands only, which means that your first stop at the carnival should be the ticket booth to make sure you are able to have a great time. Unless, of course, you've already purchased your wristbands or tickets through the presale, then all you have to do is bring them with and start having fun! You can purchase presale items through Wednesday, June 1 either online by clicking HERE or by printing the hard copy found HERE and returning to your teacher or the main office! It's going to be a blast!!! See you there! |

2015-16 Yearbooks are Almost Here!
The 2015-16 Yearbooks will be delivered to the classrooms on Monday, June 13! If your kiddos want to have a copy of this year's yearbook which will be filled with photographic class and school memories, please go online and make your $20 purchase today. We have 60 copies remaining and they will sell out quickly, so please hurry to guarantee that your child will receive a yearbook.
Cash and check payments are not accepted so please do not send money in to your child's teacher. Simply go to the PTSA Yearbook site here. If you are unsure as to whether or not you have already purchased a Yearbook for your child, you can access the list of Pre-Sales (list is as of 5/17/16) here. Just look for your child's name; if it is listed, then you have already ordered and paid for your yearbook.
Please direct any questions to yearbook@horacemannptsa.org. If you'd like to volunteer to help out with next year's yearbook, please contact the Horace Mann Elementary PTSA!
Pre-sales are ONLINE ONLY and are available until Sunday, June 5 or until they sell out. If by chance any unsold copies remain after June 13, they will be for sale in front of school on Tuesday, June 14.

the 2016-17 School Year!
We are excited to announce the SchoolKidz, Teacher Tailored School Supply Kit Program is now open for ordering! Head to www.shopttkits.com and enter our school number 42513. SchoolKidz offers brand name products in their kits such as Crayola®, Fiskar's®, Elmer's®, Staples®, and more. Best of all, the kits contain items that have been specifically requested by our teachers for each grade. We believe you will find the pricing to be very reasonable and comparable to what you would spend when driving around from store to store during the back-to-school rush. You'll see paper forms coming home this week for you to review but we will only be accepting online orders directly on the www.shopttkits.com website. Please contact Kelley Johnson at johnsonkelleyv@outlook.com with any questions!

Openings, Hellos and Good-byes
Spring almost always brings changes in our staffing. This spring is no different. Due to class size reductions (which means smaller primary class sizes), we are opening an additional kindergarten and 2nd grade classes. To fill these positions we have been able to hire Shelby Kvamme and Melanie Stevens. Ms. Kvamme is currently completing her student teaching with Mrs. Trotter in 1st grade and Ms. Stevens comes to Mann with 8 years of experience in a private school. These two new staff members will be excellent additions to our staff.
With hellos, there are often good-byes. Both of are wonderful music teachers, Ms. Berman and Dr. Baker are moving on to new adventures in life. Ms. Berman is moving to Nashville this summer and Dr. Baker is pursuing work closer to her home. We are still in the process of hiring music specialists for next year. We will also be saying good-bye to Ms. Julian from one of our Learning Centers. Ms. J will be moving back to her home town to be closer to family. We have been able to hire Laurie Roberts for this opening. Ms. Roberts has worked many years as a para-educator in Northshore School District and has recently completed earning her teaching certificate.
While we are excited to have Ms. Kvamme, Ms. Stevens and Ms. Roberts join our team, I am sure you will join us in giving a heartfelt good-bye to Ms. Berman, Dr. Baker and Ms. Julian. |
Food Allergy Awareness is coming to Mann!
Food allergies are a growing concern in schools across America. Nearly six million children - roughly two in every classroom - must watch every single bite they eat, or risk suffering a severe or even life-threatening reaction. Horace Mann wants all of our students to be safe and feel included at school. During the next few weeks, your student will learn how to "Be A PAL to Friends with Food Allergies."
My family doesn't have any food allergies. How can I help?
Thank you for asking! Here are a few ways you and your family can help: - Continue the discussion at home. Ask your child what they learned in class about food allergies. Reinforce that they should never share food with their friends. Sharing is a nice thing to do, but for kids with food allergies, sharing food can be very dangerous.
- Encourage your children to wash their hands after eating. Some people with food allergies can get sick even if they touch something that has a little bit of food on it. Hand sanitizer does not remove food proteins, only soap and water.
- Let your child's teacher know in advance if you will be bringing food into the classroom. This will enable any classmates with food allergies to plan ahead and bring their own safe treat to enjoy. If you would like to provide a treat that is safe for every child in the class, your child's teacher can put you in touch with parents of classmates with food allergies. Of course, this is not required, but it is greatly appreciated by children with food allergies. Just like every other child in the classroom, they love to feel included.
There is currently no cure for food allergies. For children with food allergies, the only way to prevent an allergic reaction is to completely avoid the foods that they are allergic to. Learn more about food allergies and anaphylaxis by going to: www.foodallergy.org. |
