Seeking Volunteers for Next Year's PTSA Board
Do your kids use IXL? Did they enjoy the movie night and the dance? Do they like the after school classes? We need you to keep these programs running smoothly and keep our school great! The PTSA Nominating Committee is seeking volunteers who would like to take an active role in leading the PTSA as members of the PTSA Board for the 2016-17 school year. Positions are: Co-President, Co-VP of Fundraising, Co-VP of Volunteers and School Services, Co-VP of Enrichment, Co-Treasurer, Co VP of Art and Secretary. This is a great way to support your child's education and get to know other parents at the school. Take a leadership role yourself or nominate someone you know! Watch for the nominating forms, which are being sent home with your student. You may also download a copy of the form from the PTSA website here. You must be a PTSA member to be eligible to serve on the Board. Any questions can be directed to:

Celebrating Reading Across America Week
Next week, we will be celebrating Read Across America with our annual kick off event for "Reach for the Stars," Monday, February 29. Horace Mann will partner with Usborne Books to complete a 2-week, pledge-based reading challenge. Students will be challenged to read or be read to for 30 minutes a day. You can support your child's efforts with reading by sponsoring them for this event. Each day your child will log their reading time by filling in the squares using the Reach for the Stars Reading Journal. Reading Journals along with money collected will be due on Monday, March 14.
Why Participate?
The best part...100% of student pledges are used to reward students and the Horace Mann staff and library. Students earn 50% of their pledges in Usborne books, and the remaining 50% of the pledges will go back to the school. Last year, we used the profits towards buying books to award students who participated with the Summer Reading Postcard Program. Over 150 students received brand new books to enjoy and received special recognition for their participation. The remaining profits were used to purchase mentor texts that teachers use to help support reading and writing instruction.
In addition to participating with the Reach for the Stars program, Usborne is bringing us a complimentary author visit, scheduled for Wednesday, March 2 from 9-9:45 am. We will be welcoming author/illustrator Michelle Nelson-Schmidt to Horace Mann. Her presentation will focus on the topic of developing a growth mindset and perseverance.
Students will also enjoy a week of Spirit Team Days related to books written by Dr. Seuss. The Horace Mann Library will be hosting our first Family Night on March 2 from 6-7 pm. I will be working with Nate Low to celebrate reading with several exciting activities including a read aloud, book talks, and reading with Sunny, a trained therapy dog! We hope to see you there!

Participants receive a Babysitting 101 handbook and certification card upon completion of the class.
Be a parent volunteer for the class and your child will have a FREE tuition! We only need one parent volunteer. There is no experience necessary, you will just be taking attendance, and helping the teacher as needed. As a parent volunteer you will also need to be a current PTSA member (you can join on the PTSA website at any time) and a current approved volunteer with the LWSD (applications are available on the LWSD website). The volunteer doesn't need to be the parent, but can also be an adult relative, neighbor, or friend, as long as they are a PTSA member and an approved district volunteer.
