Winter Break - No School
01/03

01/04Mon
First day back at school
01/05Tues6:30 pm, Explorer Community School Information Night
Hello Mann Families and Happy Winter Break!

We are through the first third of the school year - where has the time gone? While we here at the Mann PTSA (Parent/Teacher/Student Association) hope you have a fun and safe winter break, we wanted to take a moment of your time to introduce ourselves if we haven't had the chance to meet you in person.

The Mann PTSA strongly encourages having co-leaders, which means that instead of one person being 100% responsible for their role, it's shared between two people. Lia and I (Rachel) are the co-presidents and work together to make sure our PTSA runs smoothly throughout the year. Lia has a 5th grader and 1st grader at Mann and works for a Seattle-based accounting firm from home and also has children at Redmond Middle School. As for me; I have a 3rd grader and 1st grader at Mann, as well as work as a Paraeducator at Mann part time.

The Mann PTSA has been a part of Horace Mann Elementary for 30+ years and continues to be a vital element to success for both students and staff. Did you know that the PTSA pays for the art program at Mann, which is 100% volunteer run? Or that we support teachers through yearly classroom grants and additional grants based on teacher needs? The Mann PTSA is a very important part of our school community - and we need more people involved to make our school and PTSA even better!

We've already had two very successful events this year - the Spooghetti Dinner on 10/30 and Movie Night on 12/4. These events are successful because of the volunteers we have to help run those events. Think you might want to help out at an event in the future? Click here to sign up for future volunteer opportunities.

In addition to volunteering for events, we'd also like to encourage you to consider taking a more active role in the Mann PTSA next school year - we have multiple executive board positions opening up and many chair positions, too. If you have questions about any of the open spots, please don't hesitate to email Lia and I at president@horacemannptsa.org. It is a commitment when you decide to serve on the board, but it's fulfilling, directly helps your children's school, and is FUN!

ALICE/Emergency Prep Community Meeting

Our principal, Megan Spaulding, recently sent home an e-mail regarding new training that all school district staff will be utilizing regarding school lockdown procedures. The training, ALICE, stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter and Evacuate. These are techniques and procedures that have one very important main theme: keeping our students safe.  There will be parent/community training on the following dates and it's an important policy to be well-informed about. Please mark your calendars and plan on attending one of the trainings:

* January 6 - Lake Washington High School Library

* January 7 - Juanita High School Library

* January 12 - Redmond High School Cafeteria

* January 13 - Eastlake High School Commons

Horace Mann Service Club is hosting a
SOCK DRIVE

The Service Club will be collecting new socks for the YWCA. Socks are often an overlooked necessity of those in need. All sizes are needed. Look for the decorated box near the library bulletin board. The drive will continue through January 14th.
Health Room Volunteers Needed

We need caring parents like you to help staff the health room Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:45 am - 1:15 pm. Be a comforting and supportive presence for kids with minor injuries like bumps and scratches. No medical experience is necessary. Volunteer once a week or every other week.
Popcorn popper volunteers needed!

It's a tradition at Horace Mann for the 5th grade students to raise money to help pay for their end of year events. It also teaches them to work in groups, interact with all grades and responsibility in handling money. Popcorn is popped every other Friday and training is easy. To volunteer click here or contact Liz or Alex Holmquist at mann.popcorn@gmail.com.
WE WANT YOUR PHOTOS!!

Please submit photos from school events to be considered for use in the yearbook. We are in need of photos from each classroom and all school events. Here are some examples of events you may have taken photos at:  first day of school, class harvest party, assemblies, spooghetti feed, winter concert, field trips, art projects, movie night, etc.
