Horace Mann Transition Team
The Horace Mann Transition Team is group of families that band together to support others at our school who need a little assistance. We all go through hard times and our goal is to be a community that supports community. Together we provide food for families to prepare their own Thanksgiving meal and gift cards for Christmas to those Mann families who are struggling financially. We also help those going through medical or other situations by providing meals, transportation or anything that can help make the situation a little easier. Thank you to those who have already volunteered for this team, we could always use more help!
If you think you would like to be part of this team or want more information, please contact Debi Raines at debi_raines@hotmail.com. If you know a family who is need or your family could use a helping hand, please contact Debi or Ann Glassey in the school office. Together we can make a difference. |

School Facilities Task Force
develops recommendations, asks for input
The Long-Term Facilities Task Force has developed a set of draft recommendations to help the district with the issues of overcrowding and aging facilities. They are asking for feedback from the community. The recommendations address classroom capacity issues, cost reduction, efficient use of space and other issues. They also recommend specific projects to be undertaken in the future. They have launched an online survey to gather input on the recommendations. A district-wide Town Hall meeting on these recommendations is scheduled for 6-8:30 p.m. October 7 at Rose Hill Middle School.

Lois Brandt Author Visit
Horace Mann welcomed local author Lois Brandt on Thursday, September 24th, 2015! Lois Brandt is acclaimed author of Maddie's Fridge. During her visit, Lois shared her story of friendship and inspired students to join her cause in helping to end hunger in America. Lois also shared her personal journey as an author. Students learned that Lois struggled in reading and writing as a child.
Unfortunately, Lois's school did not have reading specialists like we do in Lake Washington to help with early reading and writing intervention. Rather than giving up, Lois connected with her former kindergarten teacher who offered to help her learn to read.
By the end of third grade, Lois was able to read and write. Lois ended her visit with students by having them promise to write, draw, and tell their stories adding that "their stories are important" and need to be shared. In honor of her visit, students gathered 1,697 pounds of food and donated them to HopeLink located in Redmond, WA.
Thank you to the entire Mann community for helping local families (approximately 594) fill their fridges. A big thank you to our Reading Advisory (grades 3-5) and staff (Mrs. Davis and Ms. Hall) who volunteered their time to help advertise the event; read Maddie's Fridge in primary classrooms (grades K-2); and collect, graph, and deliver food to HopeLink. On behalf of the students and staff at Horace Mann, I would also like to thank the Horace Mann PTSA, for making Lois's visit possible!
