PTSA Openings for 2015-2016

Have you been wanting to get involved with the PTSA?  Here's your chance!  We have some open positions that we would love to fill before the school year starts.  This is a great way for you to get to know other parents and to give back to your child's school.  If you'd like to learn more about these positions or to volunteer to take charge, please check out open positions at:  http://horacemannptsa.org/Page/Pta/BoardMembers.

Thank you for considering taking part in the Horace Mann PTSA!
Lois Brandt Author Visit & Food Drive

Lois Brandt Webpage
Horace Mann welcomes
local author Lois Brandt on Thursday, September 24, 2015.  Lois Brandt, author of Maddie's Fridge will be discussing the topic of diversity and how to be a good friend.  She will also be sharing with students her experience as an author.

In honor of Lois Brandt's upcoming visit, we will be hosting a special Food Drive benefiting local families through Hope Link.  The Food Drive will take place September 14th-25th.  Please join our efforts to help end hunger in our community. Donations may be delivered to your child's classroom where they will be collected and counted by the Horace Mann Student Reading Advisory. According to Hope Link's website, the foods that are most needed include:
  • Canned Meals
  • Canned Meats
  • Cereal
  • Dry Beans
  • Fruit (Canned)
  • Pasta
  • Peanut Butter
  • Rice
  • Soup
  • Tomato Products
  • Vegetables (Canned)
We will be having a friendly grade level competition.  The grade level that turns in the most food at the end of the Food Drive will earn an autographed copy of Maddie's Fridge for their classroom libraries.  If you would like to order an autographed copy of Maddie's Fridge, order forms will be sent home on Monday, September 14th.  For more information on Lois Brandt and her book, please visit her website at http://www.loisbrandt.com.
Fall 2015 Enrichment -
Classes Start Next Week!

For those participating in our Fall 2015 Enrichment Classes, here are some tips to make the most of this learning opportunity!

Discuss the "when & where" with your child
Please make sure your child knows where their class takes place. If they are coming from the YMCA, please make sure they know how to get from there to their class.

Enrichment & YMCA After Care
If your child is in the YMCA after-school program, please let them know that your child will be joining them after the enrichment class ends.

Your Child's Pre-Class Preparation
·     Snacks need to be consumed before class or after class (in the hall)
·     Remind your child to use the restroom prior to the start of class.

Resources & Reminders for Parents
Need class or instructor information? Visit: After School Enrichment Website

Important: Because our instructors and parent chaperones are required to stay until all students are picked up, if you are more than five minutes late picking up your student more than two times, your child will be removed from the class roster and your tuition will not be refunded. Please respect our instructors' and volunteers' time and pick up your student in the designated classroom on time at the conclusion of class each week.

Reflections 2015-2016
Theme is "Let your Imagination Fly"

Please encourage your students to express their artistic selves in the following categories: visual arts, photography, literature, music composition, choreography/dance, film/video and special artist*. School Facilities Task Force
develops recommendations, asks for input

The Long-Term Facilities Task Force has developed a set of draft recommendations to help the district with the issues of overcrowding and aging facilities. They are asking for feedback from the community. The recommendations address classroom capacity issues, cost reduction, efficient use of space and other issues. They also recommend specific projects to be undertaken in the future. They have launched an online survey to gather input on the recommendations. A district-wide Town Hall meeting on these recommendations is scheduled for 6-8:30 p.m. October 7 at Rose Hill Middle School.
