Summer Reading Postcard Program Dear Parents, To help promote summer literacy, we are excited to bring back the Horace Mann Summer Reading Postcard Program. Each student will receive 2 postcards on the last day of school to complete during the summer for grades K-5. Postcards will also available on the Horace Mann website and in the Horace Mann Little Library. For students in 5th grade, I will be sending a Battle of the Books list and encourage you to participate with this KCLS program next year. 5th graders may also print postcards from the Horace Mann website to use as a resource this summer or participate by posting a "shelfie" and writing a review on the Colt Readers Blog. I will be sending the link out in an email next week. All students may utilize the blog this summer and all entries will be placed in a monthly drawing during June-August. One winner from primary and one winner from intermediate grades will win a $15.00 Amazon gift card. While your child reads, we recommend using the active reading strategies and read along. On the bottom of each postcard, please comment on how your child has improved from one reading to the next and write a review on the Colt Readers Blog. After completing a postcard, you may mail them to Horace Mann or turn them into your classroom teacher during the first week of school. Postcards will be on display during the month of September and students who participate will be recognized as a group during the Welcome Back Assembly and celebrate with a special character lunch in the library, that includes selecting a new Usborne book. Last year we had 137 students participate and this summer we would like to see if we can reach our goal of having 150 students participate. If we reach our goal, teachers will surprise students with a special Flash Mob presentation. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zjf7H8K9r4U For additional resources including age specific reading lists, please check out the link below: http://imaginationsoup.net/2015/05/summer-reading-list-for-kids/ Thank you in advance for supporting literacy learning all year long.
