The Face of Art

Art Night is fast approaching (April 30th) and won't be a success without volunteers -  we need YOU! Please take a moment and sign up for a shift on the following link: ART NIGHT SIGNUP GENIUS.  It's looking pretty scarce for volunteers and we would hate to have lesson our activity list because we didn't have people to "mann" them!

Please email Ann Savage at whymom@gmail.com with any questions!

BE PART OF SOMETHING SPECIAL

PTSA Award Committee Needed!

Truly an amazing committee to be a part of! Time commitment includes gathering nominations, reading nominations, and meeting to select recipients. If interested please email Jean Chenevert at president@horacemannptsa.org.

Hear Ye, Hear Ye! The World of Fun International Carnival is coming to Horace Mann Friday, June 5th!

Last year, Horace Mann hosted it's first International Night, which was a rousing success - and we want to make it even more successful by combining our popular carnival with International Night - so the World of Fun International Carnival was born!

If you participated in the International Carnival last year, it would be our pleasure if you participated with a display this year, too.  If you didn't participate last year, why not make this year the year you introduce your culture to the entire Horace Mann community?  Please take a look at the flyer (horacemannptsa.org/Doc/Flyers/InternationalNight2015Flyer.pdf) and fill it out so we can start planning appropriately.

In addition to highlighting the varied cultures here at Mann, we'll also have games, activities, and food that you've come to expect at the carnival - the cake walk, bouncy houses, and more will all be there!   For questions or to sign up, please contact desireemichael@gmail.com.  We can't wait to see you there!

Watch out for wildlife!

This past week a bear was sighted on the Power line trail.  This sighting reminds us that living in the Pacific Northwest means we live with wildlife.  Please take a moment to remind your child that wildlife is wild and that we should never treat a wild animal like a pet.  It is always best to walk in groups and make noise as you walk, especially when you are on wooded trails.

LWSD Facilities - Input Needed

The Lake Washington School District's Long-Term Facilities Planning Task Force (http://www.lwsd.org/News/Long-term-facilities) is seeking community input on how to address the district's classroom capacity needs and aging facilities. Feedback will be gathered through an online open house April 20-28 and at the Task Force's April 29 meeting.

The Task Force's Working Subcommittee has developed a framework to use as they develop recommendations. This framework builds on what they have learned and discussed about the district's capacity, enrollment, building conditions and other topics. The framework provides an organizing structure for potential levels of investment. It also will be used to compare trade-offs and costs for different strategies and needs.

You can view the work to date on the framework and provide input at the Task Force online open house (http://lwsd-facilitiesplanning.publicmeeting.info/) between April 20 and April 28. The online open house is an ongoing opportunity to be part of the conversation about the district's facilities challenges. It will continue to be updated at key milestones. The open house will stay online until the Task Force makes its final recommendation. That recommendation is expected in June 2015.

Parent Input Forms Now Available

SBA Testing Dates

3rd-5th grade parents,

Please mark the following dates on your calendar.  It is essential all 3rd-5th grade students attend these days of school for the Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA).  Please make doctor appointments on other days or before or after school.  The SBA has an interesting component to it.  One of the testing days involves a whole class performance task, which will usually mean a class discussion.  If students miss these sessions, it will be extremely difficult to re-create these discussions in a make-up session.  Your help in making sure your child is attending school well-rested, healthy and fed on these days is much appreciated.
