Global Reading Challenge

Reading Challenge, or GRC, is a quiz bowl-type of event open to 4th and 5th grade students at my school and dozens (hundreds) of other schools across Western WA. The outstanding librarians at KCLS run this program at elementary schools across King County, WA.  They provide copies of books to each team and host the GRC challenges at each participating school.

Several months ago, our student applications went out for 5 teams of 6 students.  Names were then drawn from the applications, balanced teams were formed, and - FINALLY - the 6 books were announced! From realistic fiction to fantasy to mystery to biography, there really is something for all readers! Participants have been busy preparing questions in preparation and meeting in teams and quizzing each other using a variety of questions including multiple choice, true and false, and short answer.

Our in-school challenge will be Wednesday, January 28th, from 9:00-10:00 a.m.  You are invited to attend and to watch with your class.    Parents of the participants will also be invited to attend this fun event.

Demos for the Horace Mann Science Fair

Would you or your company be interested in setting up a demonstration table at our upcoming Science Fair on March 5th, 6-8pm?

Please email Sarah Stone at sastone73@gmail.com as soon as possible; deadline for demo submittal is February 6th.

Kindergarten Registration - Volunteers Needed!

Can you come help out at kindergarten registration on Thursday, February 5th in the afternoon? Volunteers are needed to welcome parents and children and direct them to the registration area for an hour between 1:00-4:00. Also, we need a few volunteers to help occupy little ones while parents complete paperwork. Please help us support the school and welcome next year's kindergarten class!
