Dear Mann Community,

It is amazing summer is just a few days away.  Thank you so much for your support throughout this school year.  We have had a very successful year full of student learning and fun.

There will be several changes at Mann.  The first is the new portables.  You may have seen that the construction (more like digging) has started in preparation for our new portables that will be coming this summer.  Come by during the summer and see the progress, but please remember to remind your children not to go beyond the construction fence.  While you are at Mann, remember to leave a book and share a book in our new Little Library.  It would be great to have all the Mann community reading over the summer!

The second change will be in how we announce class placements in the fall.  This year we will be having a "Back to Business" day on August 28th from 8-12 in the gym and commons.  This will be a time for you to complete any required forms like emergency cards and put money on your child's lunch account.  There will also be a PTSA station where you can join, order a yearbook and even donate monetary gifts.  Some of the stations will be required, others will be optional.  However, once a parent has completed the tasks at all of the required stations, you can then visit the last station and learn your student's class placement.  At 11 am on this same day the doors to the classroom areas will be unlocked and the Meet and Greet will begin.  This is a chance for students and parents to see their new classroom and meet their new teacher.  Please mark your calendars now and reserve the morning of August 28th for the Back to Business event and the Meet and Greet.  More information will be sent home regarding this day in my "Welcome Back" letter mailed in August.

Thirdly, there are some changes in the Mann staff.  Our beloved 1st grade teacher, Joanne Simpson, has decided to retire at the end of this school year.  Joanne has taught both general and special education in California and Washington and many, many students have benefited from her instructional expertise.  Please join me in wishing Mrs. Simpson all the best as she enters this new adventure.

We also have three teachers leaving Mann to work in other schools.  Marie Hartford will be teaching at Wilder Elementary (in LWSD) and JJ Droke has accepted a position in Snohomish School District.  And finally, Colette Weber has accepted a librarian position in Northshore School District.  All have been excellent teachers at Mann and I know they will continue to serve students to the best of their ability. One final change is that  Sara Kessel has decided to continue her child care leave one more year.

So, with some teachers leaving, this creates openings in our staffing.  I am pleased to announce that Florinda Davis will be joining our staff fulltime next year and we were also fortunate to hire Laura Bayley and Brittaney Hall.  Some of you know Miss Bayley as she has student taught with Jennifer Driftmier this past school year.  Of course, it is likely that there will be more staff changes and I will write to you all in August and share any changes at that time.

I wish you all a wonderful sunny summer filled with many memory-making activities.

Last Chance for Yearbooks

If you have not ordered a yearbook for your child you can order one for $16 online until Sunday evening at 5pm.  No online orders will be accepted after Sunday evening at 5pm.  There are only a limited number of yearbooks still available for purchase so do not delay.  You can order online at horacemannptsa.org. Any extra books will be available for purchase by check for $20 after school on Monday and Tuesday.  If you think you ordered a book with a check back in September....YOU DIDN'T!  Orders were handled differently this year and we did not advertise or even set the book price until November.  The first orders we received were online in November.  Any questions please email yearbook@horacemannptsa.org

Attention 4th Grade Parents !!

It is a Horace Mann tradition that the 4th grade parents plan and host the 5th grade graduation celebration. This is a gift to the 5th grade families so that they can relax and enjoy the festivities with their child. The parent volunteers who are organizing the event are in need of additional help to make it a success! Please take a moment to follow the link and select a volunteer opportunity to take on. Those who are also bringing refreshments are greatly appreciated. Field Day Volunteers Needed!

Kids love field day!  Can you come and help out on this fun outdoor event? We need volunteers to help chaperone the kids who will be moving through various outdoor activities and also to hand out popsicles.  Monday, June 16, 2014 from 1:30-2:45 PM.

Knights of the Multiplication Table

Hear ye, hear ye! On Tuesday, June 10th, we held our final Knighting Ceremony for the third grade. These students worked hard to earn their place in the Royal Order of the Knights of the Multiplication Table. Congratulations to our newest knights: Aaron K., Ray B., and Lauren D.
Lunch Accounts

All negative lunch account balances need to be paid by Tuesday, June 17th. If the negative balance is not paid, the student will not receive their report card until the account is brought up to date. There will be no charged lunches beginning on Friday, June 13th. Students must have enough money in their accounts for a lunch, bring in money for each individual lunch or bring a lunch from home.

Thank you!!!

Seeking an After School Enrichment Coordinator!

Do your kids enjoy the after school enrichment classes like Art, Chess and Dodgeball?

To keep this program going, we need a parent volunteer to help plan and schedule these classes. You would work with our current coordinator, Gretchen, to run the program, starting in September 2014.

If you're interested please contact Gretchen Connors or Sara Buckley
