The Little Library at Horace Mann Elementary

By Shannon Leonard

Horace Mann Elementary welcomed a new addition that has the community buzzing with excitement! On Saturday, May 2nd, 2014, a Little Library was installed.  The mission and goal of this project, as proposed by Shannon Leonard, is to promote the love of reading throughout the year. One of the benefits of having a little library on campus is the close proximity to neighborhood houses.  It emphasizes a love of literacy and community as children and families gather around the library to browse and discuss books.

The Little Library is a place where students can:

  • donate a book and pick a new book

  • select from a wide variety of books including genres and reading levels

  • have conversations about the books they read

Dedicated parent volunteers at Horace Mann Elementary will help stock and maintain the Little Library during the summer. The Little Library is stocked with books donated through PTSA sponsored events, programs sponsored by Mrs. Weber and Mrs. Beavo (the school librarians), and through local organizations. Shannon Leonard collaborated with Valaree Solheim, the manager of the Totem Lake Value Village in Kirkland, who has generously donated hundreds of books as an outreach project to help children in the local community. Staff, students, and families welcome the Little Library to the Redmond community.  Make sure to stop by for a visit and remember to bring your favorite book!

Seeking an After School Enrichment Coordinator!

Do your kids enjoy the after school enrichment classes like Art, Chess and Dodgeball?

To keep this program going, we need a parent volunteer to help plan and schedule these classes. You would work with our current coordinator, Gretchen, to run the program, starting in September 2014.

If you're interested please contact Gretchen Connors or Sara Buckley

Yearbook Committee Co-Chairs Needed for the 2014-15 School Year

We are looking for one or two parent volunteers to be our Yearbook Committee Chair or Co-Chairs for next school year. The Yearbook Committee is responsible for planning,  creating, advertising and selling the school-wide yearbook that shows off all of our wonderful students, their classrooms and all of the student activities and events that happen during the school year. The yearbook is a treasured keepsake that students look forward to receiving at the end of the school year. Additional committee volunteers will be recruited at the  beginning of next school year to help take pictures, organize sales, etc.

If we can identify someone now, this/these volunteers will be able to work with our current yearbook chair this spring. She will walk you through the process of setting everything up for next year (deciding on number of pages, negotiating price, signing the contract, choosing the theme, etc).

Without a Yearbook Committee Chair/Co-Chairs, we will be unable to publish a yearbook next year.

If you would like volunteer for the positions of Yearbook Committee Chair/Co-Chairs, please email Satin Brennan at satin_san@hotmail.com or Jean Chenevert at jeanmhamlin@yahoo.com
