school front long
Megan Spaulding sized to 60x75 Dear Mann Community:

I wanted to bring to your attention an issue we are hearing about from our local neighbors.  Traffic gets very busy especially between 8:15-8:30 a.m. in and around our school.  Some neighbors are sharing that their driveways are being blocked (especially in the cul-de-sac behind the school) and that their property is not being respected. For example, flower beds being driven on and trash thrown in the yard.  While we can't always be sure these issues are involving our community, we want to be sure that we go the extra mile to keep our community safe, clean and friendly.  Please help us do this by refraining from the behaviors listed above, and as always, please consider walking to school (especially now as the weather is getting better).

Thanks in advance for your help in making our community a great place to live and go to school!

Sincerely,

Megan Spaulding

Principal

Volunteers needed for 2014-15 School Year

Moms and Dads of Horace Mann students - if your child is returning to Horace Mann next fall, please consider taking an active role in the Horace Mann PTSA. All of the wonderful programs and events at Horace Mann would not be possible without our wonderful parent volunteers.

Some positions we need volunteers for include:

Co-Treasurer (still need 1 volunteer)

These officers are responsible for the financial operations of the PTSA. Receive and disperse PTSA funds, bank deposits and reconciliations. Prepare monthly treasurer reports, maintain cash box at PTSA events, prepare and file annual tax returns, pay membership dues on time, file all other required forms and prepare budget for new fiscal year.

Co-VP School Services & Volunteers(still need 1 volunteer)

These officers are responsible for services and programs that assist the school in achieving some of its fundamental goals not directly related to the educational curriculum (i.e. Special Services, Safe Arrival, Health Room, Health Screening, School Pictures, School Supplies, Awards, Emergency Prep, Parking Lot Patrol, Graduation, Kindergarten Registration, Transitions and more). These VPs manage the PTSA volunteer list and identify key volunteers to coordinate each school service program and support them as needed.

Co-VP Fundraising (still need 1 volunteer)

Responsible for driving efforts that generate funds for PTSA programs. Identify key coordinators to support ongoing programs (i.e. Box Tops & Amazon affiliate) as well as event coordinators for special events that occur at various times throughout the year (i.e. Bingo Night, Pass the Hat, Carnival, Movie Night) and support them as needed.

Plus there are a handful of programs that need a leader - Hospitality, Knights of the Multiplication, Safe Arrival, After School Programs, Assemblies and Yearbook.

If you would like to nominate someone, or nominate yourself, please email Satin Brennan at satin_san@hotmail.com or Jean Chenevert at jeanmhamlin@yahoo.com

Knights of the Multiplication Table

Hear ye, hear ye! On Thursday, April 17th, we held our third Knighting Ceremony for the third grade. These students worked hard to earn their place in the Royal Order of the Knights of the Multiplication Table. Congratulations to our newest knights: Kailani Y., Audrey B. and Eleanor B.

Third graders: Do lots of multiplication review at home so that you can one day soon join The Knights of the Multiplication Table! There will be two more ceremonies this year.

Art Night is soon approaching!

Please click on this picture for more information. Docents, there are some vital forms and a checklist to help guide you. Please follow the link to the PTSA website by clicking here:

Horace Mann to Assist with a UW Study for 2014-2015
Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) Study. Mann students do not automatically participate. Parents need to self-select participation.

Children with DCD have difficulty with coordinating motor skills such as hopping, skipping, handwriting, tying shoes, etc. Because of these difficulties, they also often have problems with participating in some school activities and community sports programs. The underlying cause for these motor problems varies in children with DCD. Our research is focused on improving the assessment of children with DCD so we can determine the best treatment to improve their motor abilities.
