LWSD bond measure on the ballot

As you may be aware, the Lake Washington School District board of directors voted to put a bond measure on the April 22 ballot. The measure would provide funds to build three new elementary schools (two in Redmond and one in Kirkland) and a new middle school in Redmond. Juanita High School in Kirkland would be rebuilt to house a larger number of students and a 600-student STEM-focused high school would also be built on that campus. Lake Washington High School, which was designed before the district reconfigured from three grades in high school to four grades, would receive an addition.

This bond will add space to meet the needs of the district's fast-growing enrollment. Based on careful estimates, the district has projected 4,000 more students in the next eight years. The measure would provide the classroom space needed within the next four years to house these additional students.

This bond measure would raise $404 million to invest in building new schools needed to accommodate growth and to replace and expand existing schools, costing an additional 25 cents per thousand dollars of a home's assessed value. The increase for a home of average value ($500,000) in Lake Washington School District would be $125 per year, or $10.42 per month.

For more information on the measure, please go to the district website.

CONGRATULATIONS Horace Mann!  For the 7th year in a row our school has been recognized by the state as one of the highest achieving schools when compared to other schools with similar demographics.  Next week a small group of staff will travel to Lacey, Washington to receive the award on all of our behalf.  This award was given to us for our outstanding student results on the MSP.

Speaking of the MSP, we are only administering the science MSP in 5th grade this year.  All other test assessments will be the SBAC or the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium.  Just like the MSP, we ask that you do your best to be sure your child is here at school and prepared to do their best.  This means if you could plan vacations and doctor appointments on days other than testing days, that would be appreciated.  It is also helpful if students are well-rested and have a healthy breakfast before they come to school.  Below is the testing schedule, so please mark your calendar with these dates:

One Family, Many Cultures
Thursday, April 24th, 5:30-7:00 pm

We hope that all our families will join us for International Night THIS THURSDAY. Come and sample foods from around the world. Enjoy the cultural fashion show and performances including dances, music and more. Take time to look at the displays and 3rd grade country reports. Participate in activities and games from various cultures.

Thank you to all of the families who are helping with the event. We have had a great response and are excited about the evening. It is not too late to bring your favorite dish for people to sample; just bring it with you on Thursday.

We will also be selling water and juice at the event. We look forward to seeing everyone on April 24th. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Davis, Mrs. Davies, Mrs. Ernst, Mrs. Trotter, or Mrs. Weber.

PTSA Nominating Committee
Do your kids use IXL? Did they enjoy the dance? Do they like the after school classes? Do you think Horace Mann is a great school?

If you answered yes to any of these questions then please consider volunteering for the Horace Mann PTSA for the 2014-15 school year so that we can keep these programs going. Many of our current board members have served their term limit so we are seeking new parents who would like to take an active role in leading the PTSA. This is a great way to support your child's education and get to know other parents at the school. Click here for the nomination form.

Parent Input Forms are now Available in the Main Office

This is your opportunity to give the staff at Horace Mann your input regarding your child's class placement for next school year.  Since planning begins in May, April is the only month we are accepting parental input.

Horace Mann to Assist with a UW Study for 2014-2015
Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) Study. Mann students do not automatically participate. Parents need to self-select participation.

Children with DCD have difficulty with coordinating motor skills such as hopping, skipping, handwriting, tying shoes, etc. Because of these difficulties, they also often have problems with participating in some school activities and community sports programs. The underlying cause for these motor problems varies in children with DCD. Our research is focused on improving the assessment of children with DCD so we can determine the best treatment to improve their motor abilities.
