Dear Mann Community:
Thank you so much for the wonderful conference week. Students and teachers put in a lot of hard work for these conferences so your participation is so appreciated. Hopefully you learned a bit more about how your child is learning and progressing.
Also, I wanted to make you all aware that the LWSD Board did consider and approve a temporary boundary adjustment at Monday night's board meeting. In a nutshell, this means that Mann will be getting portable classrooms and will be increasing in size. This does not mean class size will increase, but rather our population will increase. The same class-size ratio will continued to be used as it is all over the district. This is type of growth is rare in a school, but I am convinced will be a positive opportunity to welcome new members of our community.
For more information on this temporary boundary change, please visit the LWSD website at http://www.lwsd.org/News/temporary-boundary-change/Pages/default.aspx .
I hope you are having a restful weekend.
All the best,
Megan Spaulding
Principal

Reach for the Stars - January 22nd - February 5th
On January 22nd, our school will begin Reach for the Stars, a pledge based reading incentive program. Reach for the Stars participants should read or be read to at home for 30 minutes each day between January 22nd and February 5th. Students will request pledges to support their reading during the two week period. 100% of the pledge money collected will come back to the students and our school to purchase more books and support literacy at Horace Mann. Students will receive 50% of their total pledges in free books from Usborne and Kane/Miller. Horace Mann will receive the other 50% to purchase books that will support the Common Core and our summer literacy program. Your child's Reach for the Stars Reading Journal and Pledge sheet should have come home January 22nd!

Valentine Post Office
The Horace Mann Service Club has sponsored the Valentine Post Office for over 15 years. Each February our group designs, sells, and delivers valentines. Funds raised by the Valentine Post Office are donated to local charities.
Everyone loves sending valentines, and the Valentine Post Office is the perfect way for family and friends to send greetings to anyone at Horace Mann. Do you have a friend in another classroom who you would like to surprise? That's what we are all about. Do you have a younger sibling who you'd like to send a valentine? We can do that too! Moms, Dads and grandparents can send them too!
Valentines are available for pre-order in pack of 10 for $1 using the order form that came home with your child on Friday. They will also be sold
during recesses on February 10th, 11th, and 12th. Pens and markers will be available for decorating and addressing your greetings. Pre-orders should be sent by February 5.
If you have questions or would like to volunteer at one of the recess sales, please contact Jodie Miller at 5mill@frontier.com or Colleen Wolfe at jcabtwolfe@comcast.net

Please plan to join us in Olympia on Tuesday, February 4 for Focus Day 2014! You won't want to miss our premier, statewide advocacy event. Focus Day is a great way to connect with legislators as we put kids front and center this legislative session.

Hear ye, Hear ye! Announcing the Knights of the Multiplication Table!
This exciting program involves all 3rd grade students at Horace Mann. Upon completing their multiplication facts, our students will have the opportunity to kneel before our royal Mrs. Spaulding to be knighted and honored with their classmates. Knighting Ceremonies are held once a month starting in February and continue through May. The first knighting ceremony will be held on Thursday, February 20th. Happy Multiplying!
NEW! Any 4th grade students who were not knighted in December will have one last chance to become a Senior Knight in February. Practice hard!
