school front long

Megan Spaulding closer Dear Mann Community,

Happy New Year!  2014 promises to be a good year filled with learning for our Horace Mann students.  January is an especially busy month with assessments, conferences and report cards coming up at the end of the month.  Teachers work hard to be sure students are taught all standards necessary before any given assessment.  These assessments give teachers the necessary information needed to share with you at conference time and via the report card.  If you haven't heard from your student's teacher to select a time for a conference yet, you will be soon.  Mark your calendars, conferences are on January 28, 30 and 31 (Please note that these are half days and school dismisses at 11:30).

Speaking of assessments, last month I wrote to you that Mann will be administering the SBAC instead of the MSP in grades 3rd, 4th and 5th.  If you missed that letter and want to read more about this new assessment, I have attached it to this newsletter.

All the best to you in this new year!

Megan Spaulding

Principal

I would like to thank Officer Dowd, from the Redmond Police Department, who came before winter break and talked to the Horace Mann students about safety. With the younger students he focused on safely crossing the road, stranger danger, and when to call 911. He also talked with the older students about the importance of their parents always knowing where they are and internet safety.

Officer Dowd gave some suggestions about topics parents should discuss with their children at home. He talked to students about working with their parents to identify a couple of safe people in the neighborhood who they can go to if they need help. He also suggested that parents review when and how students should call 911. Finally, parents should have students practice what to say if someone calls or knocks on the door and the adults are not available. Parents, these would be great ideas to reinforce with your children at home.

Thanks Officer Dowd!

Vision and Health Screening day

Health screening day happens once a year at Horace Mann. The students are screened for routine vision and hearing issues.  The school nurse reviews results and lets parents know if there are any vision or hearing issues with their child.

We need your help on this day, January 14th, 2014. If you like to volunteer and help for all or part of the day, please send an email to co-chairpersons  Susan Langsley (susanlangsley@gmail.com) or Hadas Regev Tobias (hadasregtob@outlook.com) who are the coordinators this year's health screening day.

Or sign up at Signup Genius:

No prior experience is necessary and the training only takes a few minutes in the morning before students come in.  This has been a fun event  in the past, and parents love seeing their kids come through the lines.  Get involved!  Many helpers lighten the workload and helps get the job done quickly!
