Dear Mann Community:
Most of you are aware of the state assessment entitled the MSP or Measurement of Student Progress. This state assessment has been administered across our state for grades 3 through 10 and give student, staff and parents results of individual and group student progress in the content areas of Reading, Writing, Math and Science (although not all content areas are tested in all grades). The MSP is aligned with our old Washington state standards or Grade Level Expectancies (GLEs).
However, next year the State of Washington, along with 47 other states, are adopting the Common Core State Standards. In Lake Washington School District, and specifically here at Mann, we have been working towards implementing these more rigorous standards in ELA (English/Language Arts) and Math. Student progress on these new standards will be assessed using the SBAC, or Smarter Balance Assessment Consortium (Note that science is not part of the Common Core Standards and thus, is not assessed using the SBAC). LWSD has adopted curriculums and materials that are aligned with the Common Core State Standards and students are well on their way towards these new goals.

Vision and Health Screening day
Health screening day happens once a year at Horace Mann. The students are screened for routine vision and hearing issues. The school nurse reviews results and lets parents know if there are any vision or hearing issues with their child.
We need your help on this day, January 14th, 2014. If you like to volunteer and help for all or part of the day, please send an email to co-chairpersons Susan Langsley (susanlangsley@gmail.com) or Hadas Regev Tobias (hadasregtob@outlook.com) who are the coordinators this year's health screening day.
Or sign up at Signup Genius: http://www2.signupgenius.com/go/20F0E44A5A729A13-January No prior experience is necessary and the training only takes a few minutes in the morning before students come in. This has been a fun event in the past, and parents love seeing their kids come through the lines. Get involved! Many helpers lighten the workload and helps get the job done quickly.!
