Dear Mann Community:

 Megan Spaulding closer

Summer officially ended this week and I think we can say good-bye to 70 degree temperatures for the next few months.  With the weather changing comes new routines in our community.

First, please be sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather on a daily basis.  Recess is rarely moved to the indoors due to weather.  The only times we have come inside for recess is when it is unsafe (like strong winds or lightening).  In our lovely area, we get a lot of rain.  Having a warm, waterproof coat with a hood is a great asset to a child (please label jackets with first and last names).  Water proof shoes, like rain boots, can also help each child feel more comfortable outside.  If students come in from recess dry and comfortable, it sets them up for improved learning.

Secondly, when the weather turns wet and cold, we see less walkers and more drivers.  Please allow extra time to get to school when the weather is bad.  Patience is always needed when we have hundreds of cars dropping students off in the morning.  Please remember these safety tips when dropping your student off in the morning:

·         Have your child sitting on the right (passenger) side of the car.

·         Only drop off your child in the drop off zone.

·         Once you drop off your student, please be courteous to other drivers and safely merge into 1 lane as you round the loop.

·         Drive slowly through the parking lot and be aware that there are many walkers and bikers around.

·         If you park and walk in, please use the crosswalks.

Please refer to the attached map to see the traffic flow through the parking lot.

Parking lot safety map

Redmond Police patrol our neighborhood quite a bit, and especially at the start and end of the school day.  Please remember that the speed limit on the roads near schools are 20 MPH.

Finally, I would like to remind all of you that walking to school is a great way to start your day, even if it is in the rain.  A little bit of exercise gets the blood flowing which can help children focus more in school.

All the best,

Megan Spaulding

Principal

Colt Carnival Update

Dear Parents,

We are excited to get the new school year rolling especially with such a great start a week ago! You may have seen the flyers for the Colt Carnival (in your First Day Pack), which is coming up on Friday, October 4th from 5:30pm-8:30pm. That's less than a month away!

Please remind and encourage your kiddos to enter the Colt Carnival Poster Contest. The entry form was in your First Day Pack. If you need an extra form, please have your child go to the Main Office to pick one up. Or you can download the file from the Horace Mann Home Page (look under Announcements) and print it out at home. All completed posters must be turned in to the Main Office by Friday, September 27th in order to be eligible. One primary and one intermediate winner will be chosen by a panel of judges and announced Monday, September 30th. Good luck and have fun creating!

A few other reminders about the Carnival:

1)      We need volunteers to BAKE CAKES/CUPCAKES for the "Cake Walk" Booth. Please omit all nuts and nut products from your recipe. Place cake/cupcakes in a disposable container - these will not be returned. Please deliver your baked goods to the Arts and Science Room before school on October 4th or between 2:30pm and 4:30pm that same day. If you'd like to bake a gluten-free or other allergy-free cake/cupcakes for children who need that option, we will keep those separate from the other baked goods.

2)      We are also collecting new or gently loved books and new or gently loved & clean stuffed animals for the "Book and Stuffed Animal Walk" Booths. There will be a box outside of the Main Office where you can
donate these items.

3)      And please don't forget to sign up to volunteer for your Class Booth or other volunteer job! Various shifts are available. For Kindergarten classes, the sign-up sheet is located outside the classrooms. For all other grades, if you missed your opportunity to sign up on Curriculum Night, please sign up using this Sign Up Genius link.
www.SignUpGenius.com/go/5080944AEAE2BA02-colt/1139324  We have a variety of jobs that need to happen before, during and after carnival.

4)     We need one canopy to borrow for the night

We couldn't make this possible for the Horace Mann community without your dedication and support. Thank you!

PTSA Membership Drive
A plea from the Membership Chair:

The green PTSA membership/directory form that was included in your child's first-day packet needs to be returned ASAP.  Membership in our PTSA not only gives you a vote at our monthly meetings, but provides much-needed financial support for dozens of programs run by the PTSA.  Your $16 fee pays for emergency prep, our carnival and dances, art night, and many other things, including grants to our teachers for classroom supplies.  With your membership you will receive the highly popular student directory!

Even if you choose not to join the PTSA, the green form must be returned in order for your child's information to be in the directory.

We can list names but there will be no phone number or email address for your child if you do not return the form.  The directory makes it very easy to set up play dates, send party invitations, and coordinate in-school events like harvest parties and teach appreciation events.

Please return the form to school with your child as soon as you can!  Copies can be found on the Mann website, or click on this link.  Thank you!

We need Your Help

There are a number of very important PTSA volunteer opportunities that have not been filled yet. Please take a look below and let us know if you are interested or have questions about any of these positions.

Please contact any of the following people:

Tamara Trepte (tamaratrepte@gmail.com), Andrea Bradford (cakbradford@comcast.net), or Satin Brennan (satin_san@hotmail.com)

·         Legislative Chair - attend Legislative Assembly in October and advocate for our school at district and state.

·        Membership Co-Chair - learn the role this year and then lead next year.

·        Health/Safety Chair - oversee that all goes smoothly and liaison with leads & report info to Board of Directors (there are already lead volunteers in place for each area:  Emergency Prep, Health Screening, Health Room and Safe Arrival)

·        Safe Arrival - help the school office staff to follow up on absent students at 9am once/twice a month - you pick the day(s).

·        Yearbook - collect and then submit photos and info online at Yearbook vendor website and coordinate for our school.

·        Assemblies - research what might be good assemblies (~2 per year) to hold at our school and then coordinate getting the vendor.  Help as needed with school-related assemblies.

·        Awards Committee - at the end of the school year, send out nomination forms so people can nominate a teacher, parent or community member for being exemplary and then choose winners from the entries and then present the awards at the final Awards Assembly.

·        Nomination Committee - help find people for the PTSA Board of Directors for next school year.

Every fall, the Association selects its legislative priorities, and hearing from you is a valuable step in the process

You can respond to the survey anonymously or provide your contact information at the end. The survey covers four issues that members asked to make priorities. The survey closes on September 30, 2013.
