Dear Mann Community:

 Megan Spaulding closer

Thank you to everyone who came to our Curriculum Night this year.  It was terrific to have a full house once again.  It is a proven fact that students who have parents that are involved in their education, do better in school.

If you missed last night, here are some of the highlights from our "all-school" meeting.

MSP Results

Students who took the MSP at Mann last spring should have their individual results mailed home.  As a school, we continued to out-perform the state and district averages. Our students scored on the 90th or higher percentile in all areas.  In every content area, and at every grade level, an average of 50% or more of our student body earned a Level 4 (Exceeding Standard).  In some areas more than 70% of our students are at Level 4.

Common Core State Standards

Washington, along with 45 other states in the US, has adopted new common standards in English/Language Arts (ELA) and Math.  These standards are based on getting our students ready for their future in a global economy.  They are benchmarked against academic standards from top-performing countries in the world and create consistent goals for all students regardless of where they live or go to school.  For more information on these standards, please visit our district website at:  http://www.lwsd.org/Parents/CCSS/Pages/default.aspx

PTSA

The PTSA is an integral part of the Horace Mann Community.  Please join and consider volunteering to support our school.  For more information on the Mann PTSA please visit the Mann website at: http://www.lwsd.org/School/mann/Pages/default.aspx and go to the PTSA link.  There you will find useful information and be able to join and sign up to volunteer online.

All the best,

Megan Spaulding

Principal

Colt Carnival Update

Dear Parents,

We are excited to get the new school year rolling especially with such a great start a week ago! You may have seen the flyers for the Colt Carnival (in your First Day Pack), which is coming up on Friday, October 4th from 5:30pm-8:30pm. That's less than a month away!

Please remind and encourage your kiddos to enter the Colt Carnival Poster Contest. The entry form was in your First Day Pack. If you need an extra form, please have your child go to the Main Office to pick one up. Or you can download the file from the Horace Mann Home Page (look under Announcements) and print it out at home. All completed posters must be turned in to the Main Office by Friday, September 27th in order to be eligible. One primary and one intermediate winner will be chosen by a panel of judges and announced Monday, September 30th. Good luck and have fun creating!

A few other reminders about the Carnival:

1)      We need volunteers to BAKE CAKES/CUPCAKES for the "Cake Walk" Booth. Please omit all nuts and nut products from your recipe. Place cake/cupcakes in a disposable container - these will not be returned. Please deliver your baked goods to the Arts and Science Room before school on October 4th or between 2:30pm and 4:30pm that same day. If you'd like to bake a gluten-free or other allergy-free cake/cupcakes for children who need that option, we will keep those separate from the other baked goods.

2)      We are also collecting new or gently loved books and new or gently loved & clean stuffed animals for the "Book and Stuffed Animal Walk" Booths. There will be a box outside of the Main Office where you can
donate these items.

3)      And please don't forget to sign up to volunteer for your Class Booth or other volunteer job! Various shifts are available. For Kindergarten classes, the sign-up sheet is located outside the classrooms. For all other grades, if you missed your opportunity to sign up on Curriculum Night, please sign up using this Sign Up Genius link.
www.SignUpGenius.com/go/5080944AEAE2BA02-colt/1139324  We have a variety of jobs that need to happen before, during and after carnival.

We couldn't make this possible for the Horace Mann community without your dedication and support. Thank you!
