Dear Parents,
As you know, this week's tragic and devastating Oklahoma tornadoes resulted in another instance of student loss of life and injury at schools. Whenever this occurs, our students can be affected and may wonder about our safety during a disaster. While the likelihood of tornado in Western Washington is extreme low, students may feel unsettled and edgy. The American Academy of Pediatrics provides excellent resources for parents to discuss natural disasters. They provide specific resources on how to talk to children about disasters.
We do all we can to ensure the safety of our students. Each month at Horace Mann, we practice at least one of our safety drills. This practice provides the confidence and the mental and physical "muscle memory" for our students and staff. We review our procedures to continually improve our practices based on the best advice from our district, city, state, and federal officials. Our regular drills include fire, earthquake, shelter-in-place, and lockdown.

If your student will be taking the MSP, please make every effort to get them to school that day well-fed and well-rested. It is much appreciated if doctor appointments and other planned absences can be avoided during this time. |

Proposed PTSA Budget for 2013-2014
A proposed budget for the 2013/14 Horace Mann PTSA has been posted to the Treasurers page on the Mann website. The proposed budget will be discussed and voted on at the May 30 PTSA General membership meeting at 7pm in the Mann Library. All PTSA members are invited to attend.

HopeLink End Summer Hunger Coin Drive May 20 - May 31
You are invited to help the Service Club in supporting the End Summer Hunger Program at HopeLink. This program provides resources to families who rely on the reduced and free lunch programs during the school year. Send in your coins and they will be counted and donated directly to HopeLink in support of this very important program. We can make a difference...every penny counts!

2013 Awards Committee
The 2013 Awards Committee is now accepting nominations for the Golden Acorn, Golden Apple and Mannie Awards. These awards are presented to outstanding educators and volunteers who have gone above and beyond for the benefit of the students at Horace Mann. Please look for the nominations to come home this week or click here to print out a form. All forms need to be submitted to the office in an envelope marked, "Awards" by May 31st. The awards will be presented at the awards ceremony on June 17th.

Art Night Needs Your Help! 
This year's Art Night will be held on Friday June 7 from 6:00-8:30pm. In order to make this special night a success, we need your help. We need several more pop-up canopies to set up outside. If you own a canopy and are willing to loan it for art night, please contact Annie Savage at whymom@gmail.com. We also need yarn and egg cartons. There is a box in the Art Room where you can leave your donations. Thank you!
Art Is Everywhere--Save the Date!
Art Night is on Friday June 7 from 6:00-8:30pm--only 2 weeks away! Art Night is a celebration of all the art that the students have created over the year. Much of it will be on display throughout the school during Art Night. There will also be food, entertainment, take-home art projects, a raffle, and a silent auction for donated art! Don't miss out on the fun! We look forward to seeing you there!
Art Docent Strategy Meeting for Art Night
The upcoming docent strategy meeting is on Tuesday May 28 at 2pm in the Art Room at Horace Mann. Art docents in all grade levels are strongly encouraged to attend. We will be discussing classroom art projects for the raffle, canopy decorations, organization and volunteer jobs for art night, etc. Please visit the following link: Art Night
