Faculty Benefit Concert 2015 - what a treat!

On Sunday, November 1, 2015, our Faculty gathered together to volunteer their time to perform a concert for their students and the general public.  The purpose of this event was to raise money for the school's bursary fund; helping students in need continue their studies.

The concert was filled with lively and energetic music, from the Entertainer to Le Grand Tango and music from Star Wars.  The faculty had the audience roaring with laughter when they traded instruments to play a folk song.  Students loved seeing their teachers look slightly uncomfortable playing unfamiliar instruments - the tables were turned and the students were delighted.

As the concert ended, the audience stood up and with a roar of approval gave the Faculty a standing ovation.  An afternoon well spent and a good cause rewarded.

Folkrum Outreach Opportunity

SuzukiMusic has been invited to participate in an event for an Ottawa arts organization called "Folkrum".  Our own Faculty, Marion Arthur,  has been part of the Folkrum development team over the last year as their "artist in residence" with her band Saturnfly.  Marion is organizing a group of our students to perform at Folkrum's new location in downtown Ottawa.  The students will be performing from 4:15pm until 5:00pm on Sunday November 29th at 21 Selkirk Street (on the Vanier side of the Rideau River)  Parking is available.  Marion will lead the students in a performance of familiar Suzuki repertoire and they will also have the opportunity to join with other Suzuki students from the studios of Joan Harrison (cellist) and Laura Nerenberg (violinist).  The performance will be in "play-in" style and parents are invited to come support their children and to learn more about this great initiative!
Interested students can contact Marion directly at [email protected].   The deadline to participate in this outreach opportunity is Friday November 20th.  To find out more about Folkrum, you can visit their website here: www.folkrum.com

Children Learn to Smile From Their Parents: Nurturing the Home Practice Environment

Hello Suzuki Parents!

I hope that you have had a wonderful Fall season! These past couple weeks I have found myself going over my Suzuki Teacher Trainer material and found an Article sites a talk given by Dorothy Jones that really impacted me. Speaking both as a Suzuki Parent and a Suzuki Teacher, she shares about her realization that her home practice environment "was not the one Dr. Suzuki [was] talking about; an environment that encourages but does not force.". Dorothy explains how listening affected the home practice environment:

...one of the things I did was tape our practicing and then would listen to it to it after, and I would realize that I was talking a great deal...I tried to start listening more and saying very little.
"When Dorothy and her children began actively listening to their Suzuki repertoire they experienced further progress: "So it seemed that the more listening that happened the more quickly, and the more naturally the child learned..."
Another point that I liked was having a goal of enjoying each practice session:
"How to enjoy it (practicing) became a real goal of mine, how was I going to enjoy this on a daily basis. What I decided I had to do was forget about how much I expected to happen, and indeed to be happy with one thing well done..."

In practicing with your children there are always going to be struggles at each step of the journey. As we are helping children to develop both beautiful tone and beautiful hearts, listening is the first step in creating a nurturing environment. Even when a child is doing something wrong in practicing, listening first shows respect for the child and their stage in their development.
I remember as a young violinist my dad being my practice parent. He had a violin that he used to learn along with me. Though it was very challenging at times, journeying through the experience brought us closer together. To this day my dad and still connect through music and he still continues to be my biggest fan.  Enjoy the little successes and encourage through the hard practicing days--I assure you it will create a bond that lasts a life time!

Useful and fun apps for practice

1) For iPhone/Apple users, download Petronome for free!  It's a metronome expressed through pet sounds (barking, meowing, etc). The kids can choose the pet they want to practice with.  The faster the tempo goes, the harder the pet works and they start to sweat!  A super cute free app with the option to purchase more sounds.

2) Also only for iPhone/Apple users - Note Squish!  We've mentioned this one before, but it's so amazing that it needed a second mention.  Based on Whack-a-Mole, the app tests students note reading abilities.  There are three speeds and a lot of options; this app is well thought out and entertaining.

3) The Amazing Slow-Downer: for those who would like to practice with the recording but can't get it up to speed - this app slows down any piece but keeps the pitch the same.  Alternatively, there are several other apps which do the same thing.

Happy practicing!!
