Volunteer Roundup
by Chantal LeBlanc

Here's where we need your help most in the next weeks:
  • Tree Decorating Challenge: We were chosen to decorate a tree with the SuzukiMusic 25th theme and the beautiful Twinkle Stars and Paper Cranes that were made by our students and volunteers. We need 2-3 volunteers to decorate our tree at the Canadian Museum of Civilization on November 29th at 2:30pm. Sign-up here.
  • Group Class Reception: still a number of shifts to fill at both the front lobby and east side reception areas, including an immediate need in the afternoon slot this Saturday. A schedule coordinator is also needed if you'd rather work from home. Sign-up here.
  • Pizza Sales table: Also many openings left to fill for this task. Contact the Pizza Schedule Coordinator or sign-up here.
  • Play-in: A few more volunteers are still needed to help set-up the cafeteria and man the fundraising table. Sign-up under Upcoming Events for this or any other event coming up.

Thanks to our many volunteers!!! Feel free to contact me directly at cbl.ncssm@gmail.com

Message from the Board
Annual General Meeting and new members

Our Annual General Meeting was held on Saturday October 27th, in the library at Canterbury High School, at which was held the election of our new Board of Directors for the year 2012-2013.

Thanks to everyone who attended in person or by proxy. The reports and documents from the meeting can be found on our Board of Directors page of the website.

See the article Who's Who at SuzukiMusic below for an introduction to all of the board members.

Samko and Miko Toys
Sale is on this weekend only in Ottawa!

Thanks to volunteer parent, Sharon Donnelly, for once again organizing our participation in the upcoming Samko & Miko Toy and Book sale.  This is a chance to get your holiday and birthday party shopping done, while helping fundraising efforts for our school! It is easy...
  •  Samko & Miko is hosting another HUGE toy and book sale this weekend at the new CE Centre at 4899 Uplands Drive from Nov 7-12th and your purchases at this sale can help SuzukiMusic!
  • In order to help raise funds for our school, by attending this sale, just mention our group name, "SuzukiMusic", to the cashier upon payment and they will stamp your receipt.
  • Bring your original stamped receipt to group class Reception on either the Nov 10 or Nov 17.  (please photocopy the receipt for your own records)
  • You may also pass on your receipt(s) to your private teacher for remittance at group class.
  • Attached here is the Samko & Miko Ottawa Sale Flyer for a look at their special prices on toys and books.

Suzuki Teen Mentoring Course
Registration deadline Nov 13th!

We are very pleased to be offering another Suzuki Teen Mentoring course, with Elayne Ras, for this school year. The course will be held on Saturday, January 12, 2013, from 1pm to 6pm at Bells Corners United Church. Students wishing to enroll must be aged 13 or over, by January 2013, and be studying Suzuki Book 4 or over. The registration form is available for download here.

Upon completion of a 5-hour Suzuki mentorship course, and observing six Suzuki Book 1 private lessons, certified SuzukiMentors are able to offer assistance to families and teachers in need of a little extra help; whether it be by aiding teachers in various educational settings, such as in private lessons or group classes, or through practice "buddy" sessions.

Although SuzukiMentors are not teachers, and should not be thought of as such, they are trained to enhance a younger student's experiences in music by encouraging them and finding ways to help with their studies through supplementing and reinforcing what each student is already doing with their private teachers. For further information about the Suzuki Teen Mentor program, see our website.

Upcoming Play-in, November 24th
This year's theme: Happy Birthday SuzukiMusic!

On Saturday, Nov. 24th, we'll be having our Play-in at 1:00pm in the cafeteria at Canterbury High School and this year's theme is Happy Birthday! in celebration of our 25th anniversary.

Every student will join in the special music we have planned for the occasion and parents can win prizes! So, brush up on your SuzukiMusic trivia!

As was traditional with Dr Suzuki's famous Play-ins, we always love sharing a sweet treat or snack after playing all together so, in keeping with this year's theme, we'd like to ask families to bring along birthday cupcakes to share afterwards. (Please ensure they are nut-free!)

Volunteers will be on hand to accept your pot-luck cupcakes and arrange them on our snack table to enjoy after the Play-in.

Faculty Benefit Concert for Bursary Fund
Sunday afternoon at 3pm, January 27th, 2013

Don't miss this one! Once again our generous SuzukiMusic Faculty and some surprise, special guests, will be donating 100% of their time and talent in support of our Bursary Fund, which helps some of our dedicated students and families who need financial help from time to time, to continue their music studies.

The Bursary Program is a fundamental way in which we can all share the joy of music and learning within our musical community and is solely funded by this annual event. Please bring your family and friends and come and enjoy a very inspiring and beautiful concert by these talented musicians who are your very own teachers.

Admission by Donation. See website for more details.
