Dear NYSMEAns,
The seal and seabird cruise was an educational adventure from Breezy Point, Queens to Hoffman and Swinburne islands. We were very excited to view harbor seals, egrets, cormorants and sea gulls. Dr. Merryl Kafka was the naturalist on board giving an eco- tour of Jamaica Bay. A Columbia Lamont-Doherty graduate student, Rebecca Gibson presented a water chemistry demonstration onboard the American Princess during the cruise.
NYSMEA is having a board meeting at the Waterfront Museum in Red Hook on Sunday, May 3rd from 10-1.
We will be discussing, It's My Estuary Day on Saturday, May 30th from 10-4 and the 2015 annual NYSMEA conference this Fall.
NYSMEA is helping to coordinate the marine education event It's My Estuary Day along Coney Island Creek with several partnering organizations. Many science organizations, city agencies, waterfront businesses, local STEM students, politicians and the community are participating in the event. Several scientists, organizations and the local historian will discuss estuaries and there importance. Activities will include seining, water chemistry, oyster gardening, SCUBA dry dressing and underwater robotics.
Lastly, NYSMEA will be setting up a whale watching trip in June. We will explore the Atlantic ocean looking for all forms of marine life.
I hope to see everyone at the upcoming events.
Best always,
Lane Rosen
