Greetings!

Summer is just around the corner. As you head out to enjoy the weather, we want to remind you that learning at the Center doesn't stop! We are kicking off our summer in Orlando this week at the 4th Annual Lean Healthcare Transformation Summit, with close to 600 fellow healthcare leaders. If you can't make the trip, follow the conversation on Twitter at #HCSummit13.

Investing in Lean Learning
When leaders at Ingalls Health System in Harvey, IL, started their lean journey, they were looking for organizations they could model themselves after. They continually heard good things about ThedaCare and decided to make an investment in lean learning. As part of that, they purchased 100 copies of On the Mend to give to their management council. We sat down with Mike Hicks, senior vice president and chief operating officer at Ingalls, to learn more about why he decided to purchase the books.

How are the books being used at your organization?
Originally, I purchased a couple of copies for our executive team. I got such great feedback, I decided to purchase more for our management council. I passed them out and encouraged everyone to read it.

How has the book helped to further your lean journey?
The book was a kick off for us to pursue other lean learning tools, such as a site visit. We came away impressed and enthused. Seeing lean so thoroughly embedded in the culture helped our CEO become even more engaged.

What is your advice to organizations just starting their lean journeys?
It's sometimes daunting to figure out where to start, but your internal radar won't work if you're standing still. Little payoffs come quickly in lean, and the huge cultural payoff comes over time. Get off the fence and get started!

A focus on patient-centeredness led to the development of a Multi-disciplinary Care Clinic. A variety of physician specialists meet on the scheduled day of the patient visit to share information and develop a unified plan of care for the patient.
