Greetings!

More than anything, the healthcare industry is in need of thoughtful innovators who are willing to push the envelope, share experiments and try new approaches to deliver better patient value. That's exactly the kind of attitude we foster through our products, services and resources. In this issue, you'll discover examples of how we share those experiments and learnings with you:

Potent Medicine Wins
Shingo Award

Center CEO John Toussaint, MD,  earned his second prestigious Shingo Research and Professional Publication Award for his book, Potent Medicine: The Collaborative Cure for Healthcare.

The award is given annually by The Shingo Prize for Operational Excellence, a not-for-profit organization that is part of the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business at Utah State University. It recognizes a book's contribution to the body of knowledge surrounding operational excellence.

"For Shingo to honor Potent Medicine with this award is both humbling and gratifying," said Dr. Toussaint. "The Shingo Prize is well-respected among lean organizations and leaders. This recognition is the 'Good Housekeeping seal of approval.'"

In Potent Medicine, Dr. Toussaint offers practical advice to transform healthcare and deliver better patient value. The book serves as a call to action for healthcare leaders, policy makers, and patients to illustrate the changes required for delivery of care, improved transparency of patient safety, and payment reform.

Dr. Toussaint's first Shingo Award-winning book, On the Mend: Revolutionizing Healthcare to Save Lives and Transform the Industry, uses plain language and real-life examples to explain lean healthcare.

Lean Leadership vs. Conventional Leadership
One difference between lean and conventional leadership is that lean looks at systems and processes rather than placing the blame on individuals when an error occurs. Lean moves away from name, blame and shame. In lean leadership, we ask "Why did that happen?" and "What could have prevented that error?" instead of "Who did that?"

Attend Lean Fundamentals for Healthcare Leaders on May 16 and 17 to learn about all the ways lean principles drive behaviors that foster an environment of continuous improvement. For more information, click here.
