New Book Offerings from the Center

The Center is expanding its book offerings to give customers a deeper background on lean in healthcare. You can now purchase these two new titles from our online library at createvalue.org:

  • Healthcare Kaizen: Engaging Front-Line Staff in Sustainable Continuous Improvements by Mark Graban and Joseph E. Swartz
  • Lean Hospitals: Improving Quality, Patient Safety, and Employee Engagement, Second Edition by Mark Graban

Lean Hospitals explains how to use the Lean Management system to improve safety, quality, access and morale while reducing costs. The book outlines the challenges facing today's health systems, including rising costs, falling reimbursement rates, employee retention and patient safety.

The updated edition features a new introduction by Center CEO John Toussaint, MD. It also includes new and updated material on identifying waste, case studies, and examples and data throughout. The book examines the steps for a successful transition to a lean culture and provides the understanding of lean principles needed to reduce common hospital errors.

Healthcare Kaizen focuses on the principles and methods of daily continuous improvement for healthcare professionals and organizations. It outlines methods used by numerous hospitals around the world, and discusses the mindsets and philosophies needed to make Kaizen work effectively.

Want to follow the lead of ThedaCare and others who have moved beyond week-long improvement events to a more complete management system based on lean principles? This book is for you.

Business Intelligence Summit

What could your organization accomplish if the right information was in the right hands at the right time on a daily basis? We asked a group of 36 select healthcare leaders this at the Center's inaugural Clinical Business Intelligence (CBI) Summit.

The summit brought together executive vice-presidents, system directors, research analysts and other healthcare leaders to discover the challenges faced by data and reporting systems together. Attendees had the unique opportunity to learn from their peers about ways they are addressing critical business analytics needs and leveraging information to achieve higher value healthcare delivery.

Our conversations confirmed more than ever that information is an asset and that business intelligence is valuable when deployed through strategic planning. This is just the first of many steps in our journey of continuing a collaborative approach.

The ThedaCare Center for Healthcare Value is transforming the healthcare industry to deliver higher value through experiments, collaboration and education that integrate three interdependent components: delivery, transparency and payment. In these areas, the Center spreads learning and accelerates improvement.
