SPRING is right around the corner!

Even though we just went through an Arctic blast, good weather is not too far away.  The first official day of Spring, (March 20th), is about 4 weeks away. Pretty soon, winter will be a memory and you will be enjoying beautiful weather.

It's Time To...  

Plan for enjoying your Spring garden:

Even with the unsettled weather we typically experience in February, it's a great month for getting your spring gardening under way.

  • Order perennial plants and bulbs now for cut flowers this summer. Particularly good choices are phlox, daisies, coreopsis, asters and lilies.
  • Check bulbs or tubers you're storing for summer flowers and get rid of any that are soft or appear diseased.
  • Send off seed orders this month to take advantage of seasonal discounts. Some companies offer bonus seeds of new varieties to early buyers.
  • If you have a vegatable garden, try growing at least one new vegetable that you've never grown before. Dwarf varieties that use less space while producing more food per square foot may be better than what you're growing.
  • Don't start your vegetable plants indoors too early. Six weeks ahead of the expected planting date is early enough to seed fast-growth species such as cabbage. Eight weeks is best for slower-growing types such as peppers.
  • Have your lawnmower professionally sharpened and tuned now to avoid the rush later.
  • Also sharpen and oil tools such as shovels, shears and trimmers and tune up gas-powered weed-eaters if necessary.

The above pictures represent the Before & After of a patio renovation we had the privilege to complete.
 
When they purchased their home the homeowners inherited a paver patio which had been installed many, many years ago.  To say the patio had seen better days is an understatement.  
 
After a few meetings to determine the client's goals and spending some time evaluating the current patio, the plan began to evolve.  The transformation began by removing all of the old pavers.  Once this was done we excavated to a proper depth, installed geotextile fabric, and started installing a compacted stone base.  Once we knew the foundation for the patio was properly installed we started to install full color flagstone.  The flagstone was dry laid and set in a random pattern.

Northampton Building Solutions - Bathroom Renovation
Ideas on Age-Proofing your bathroom!

Have you looked around your bathroom and started thinking about the need for a renovation or an update? If so, consider implementing some of these changes into the renovation.  Let's face it, none of us is getting any younger.  

Install a shower bench - this provides a safe place to sit and is vital to an age-proof bathroom.  The bench can be easily built into a shower and tiled to match the walls.

Install a handheld shower head - they are easily adjustable and when used in conjunction with a shower bench make it easy to wash up while seated.  

Install grab bars - they will provide something for you to hold on to when you enter and exit the shower. Consider placing one outside the shower and on at least two of the walls inside the shower.

Install a comfort height toilet - makes sitting and standing much easier and reduces the strain on your back and knees.

Low threshold entry into shower - if you do not have a shower stall consider converting your tub into a shower stall.  This will remove the hurdle of having to step over the side of the tub and make life much easier.
