It's Time To...
Start thinking about what you would like to do this spring ...
With the very mild weather we have enjoyed, it looks like we are about to be hit with more typical winter weather.  This presents us with a great opportunity to take care of some last minute winter prep and start thinking about spring.
  • Take one last look at your gutters to make sure they are clean and secure.  Heavy snow and ice can stress your gutters
  • Remove your outdoor hoses and make sure your hose bibs are shut off and protected from freezing.
  • Prune trees for winter so fallen limbs don't damage your property during snow and ice storms.
  • If it is not too cold, and you have not done it already, now is a great time to dead head your perennials.  This means trim off the old and growth to make way for new growth in the upcoming spring.
  • Stock up on snow & ice melt before stores begin to run low on inventory.
  • If you have a snow blower, start it up to make sure it is running properly.
  • Give Northampton a call to discuss any projects you may be considering around your home.
Before & After
Northampton Building Solutions - Basement Transformation!

The above Before & After pictures show a basement renovation we had the privilege to complete.

The homeowners purchased a home that had a very dated basement which they could see themselves or their growing family utilizing in its current condition.

We met with the homeowners to assess the current condition of the basement and to get a feel for how they wanted to used the space.  We realized that, as with most families, storage space and a place to relax as a family were important goals.

The project began with a good deal of demo and the removal of the old worn tile floor.  We started framing the basement to partition areas into a laundry/storage area, a play area, and an area for sitting to watch TV or play their video games.  One neat feature is the built-in entertainment center shown in the picture.  We also made the most of the tight space to provide plenty of storage, an example are the closets on each side of the entertainment center.  New drywall throughout, a new rug, proper lighting, fresh paint and voila, a basement for the 21st century.

The homeowner is now able to relax and the kids are able to enjoy their new basement.

Tile maintenance tips

Most homes have tile in their bathrooms.  It is an ideal material for your tub and shower walls, it is easy to clean and durable enough to deal with many, many years of hot soakings.

Tile is not maintenance-free, however.  Tile walls and tile shower pans are only as strong as the small grout joints between each piece of tile.  Once the grout starts to crack, which will happen over time, it is only a question of when water seeps in and ends up causing damage to the mortar or drywall behind the tile.

The earlier you address issues with your grout and caulk the better.  Do not wait until tiles start to get loose or pop off the wall, or you notice signs of a leak in another area of your home.  When you first notice a crack or void in your grout or caulk you should address the situation.  Three main areas you would want address are:  re-grout your tile, re-caulk between the tub and tile or shower pan and tile, caulk around the shower handle and tub faucet.  You may also want to consider a grout sealer.  All of the materials and tools needed are readily available at your local hardware store or home improvement center, or you could call Northampton and we could probably help you with the chore.
