It's Time To...
Continue to prep for the upcoming cold ...
You still have time to prepare your landscape for Winter AND work you do now can have rewards next Spring.
  • Cut back faded perennials for winter.
  • It is still a great time to plant new trees and shrubs.
  • Prune trees for winter so fallen limbs don't damage your property during snow and ice storms.
  • November is a great time to transplant any trees or shrubs you may want to relocate, while they are dormant, to give them the best opportunity for growth next spring.
  • Consider replenishing mulch around trees, shrubs, and in your landscape beds, for cold weather protection.
  • You can still plant spring flowering bulbs, such as tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths.
  • Continue watering your landscape trees and shrubs, (if no significant rainfall).  It is important for plants to go into cold weather with adequate moisture.
  • Around Thanksgiving consider another application of lawn winter fertilizer.
Before & After
Northampton Nursery- From Deck to Patio!

The above pictures represent the Before, During, & After of a patio we recently had the privilege to complete.

The homeowner had a very old deck which, in addition to not providing a functional area to entertain and relax, was in need of major renovation.

After a few meetings with the client to get a handle on how they wanted to use the space and the look they wanted, we worked out the basic layout and design for their new and improved space.

We began be removing all of the existing decking, framing, and footers for the old deck.  We were then able to get a good look at the site conditions under the old deck and determine the best way to prepare the site for the transition to a new patio at grade.  After properly excavating the site, installing geotextile fabric, and the proper foundation of compacted modified stone base, the transformation was under way. Picking up on a Flagstone walkway the client had at the front of the home, we installed a Full Color Flagstone patio and walkway.  In addition we set curbstone borders along the walkway to add definition. One of our favorite areas if the wall you see in the background of the After picture.  This is not just a wall but with a Bluestone top serves as a neat bar and grill area.

The homeowner is now able to relax and enjoy their new outdoor living space.

Water Heater maintenance tips

Water heaters are a crucial part our your home's infrastructure.  Most of us take them for granted, while they work hard every day providing warm showers, clean clothes, and sparkling pot and pans among other things.

Often out of sight and out of mind, water heaters typically go unnoticed until something goes wrong - that unwanted cold shower or a flood of water leaking from the heater.

Depending on the manufacturer, and your specific conditions, water heaters generally have a life of 8-12 years.

One very simple thing you can do to help maintain your water heater is to drain it a couple of times per year.  It's pretty simple; just shut off the cold water supply, connect a garden hose to the drain valve and run it to a drain, your sump pump, or outside until the tank is drained.  This will help remove all of the damage causing sediment and other debris which has accumulated in your tank.

Another maintenance task you could do is inspect your anode rod annually, or even twice per year.  Check your owners manual for the simple instructions to check and replace if necessary
