Landscaping

What material should I use for my hardscape?

We continually see clients thinking about this and while every situation is unique and everyone has their own preferences, there is some common ground.

See this handy chart, put together by EP Henry, comparing different choices for your hardscape:

In our experience constructing your hardscape using pavers or similar products, (including natural stone such as flagstone), can provide you with a long lasting, and virtually maintenance free solution to your hardscape needs.

As with everything we do, a very important factor in this is the proper installation of the materials for the application.  We believe pavers and similar products are best when they are dry laid.  This goes for natural stone, such as flagstone, as well.

Long term, when your hardscaping is properly installed using pavers or similar products in the dry laid fashion, you will not experience the problems people traditionally have with concrete, asphalt, or wet laid materials, such as cracking.

It's Time To...
Fall is here and there is plenty to do,,,
This is a great time of year to prepare your landscape for Winter AND work you do now can have rewards next Spring.
  • October is a great time to plant new trees and shrubs.
  • It is also a great time to transplant any trees or shrubs you may want to relocate.
  • This is prime time for planting spring flowering bulbs, such as tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths.
  • Continue watering your landscape trees and shrubs if rainfall doesn't reach an inch or more every week or 10 days.  It is important for plants to go into cold weather with adequate moisture.
  • Remove any fading summer annuals before a hard frost.
  • Deadhead Mum blooms as they fade, this will encourage additional growth.
  • Replenish or replace mulch in your landscape to provide winter protection to your trees and shrubs.
  • Divide and transplant perennials, Peonies, and bulbs
  • Continue weeding your landscape beds, as needed.
Before & After
Northampton Building Solutions - Kitchen Update!

The above pictures represent the Before & After of a Kitchen update we recently had the privilege to complete.

The homeowner had a functional yet dated kitchen, which was asking to be brought into the 21st century.

After a few meetings with the client and consultation with the kitchen designer the idea of maintaining the existing layout and providing some additional storage took hold.

We began be removing all of the old cabinets, counter tops, and the vinyl floor.  We also removed the soffit above the upper cabinets since they did not serve any purpose.  Removing this soffit allowed us to create the trim work detail and crown molding which gives the appearance of the cabinets going to the ceiling.  We replaced all of the cabinets, maintaining a similar layout and also install quartz counter tops.  A couple of finishing touches include the installation of a new tile floor and a new tile back splash.

The homeowner is now able to enjoy the functionality, which always existed, in a space which is much brighter and enjoyable for the cooking they love to do.

Northampton Building Solutions - Home Improvement Tip
Start getting your home ready for winter

We all know that maintaining your home is a year-round job. If we learned anything from the last couple of winters, getting ready for the arrival of the cold weather is important.  So, after you have turned off the AC, but before the cold arrives, here are some items for your to-do list:
  • Inspect your furnace. Replace dirty filters, and clean registers and grilles.
    • Might also be a good time to call your HVAC company and have them come out to service the system before winter.
  • Use caulk, spray foam, and weather stripping to plug leaks around windows and doors.
  • Plug up holes where pipes, vents, or electrical conduits run through walls, ceilings, and floors.
  • Add fiberglass insulation to the attic floor and house walls.
  • Wrap your water heater with an insulation blanket (check with your owner's manual or the store first) and cover any exposed pipes with ready-made pipe jackets.
  • Clean gutters and downspouts to avoid ice dams that can push water under the shingles.
    • You should probably do this now and again after all of the leaves have fallen.
  • Make sure chimney and venting systems are working properly.
