It's Time To...

Plan for enjoying your Spring garden:

So far Spring has been off to a slow start, with the snow on the first day of Spring and the lingering cold temps.  Worry not, the nice weather is right around the corner, so it is a great month for getting your spring gardening under way.

  • March is a good time to transplant shrubs. You can move them as soon as the soil is workable, but before buds have swelled or broken open.
  • March is also a good time to fertilize those shrubs.
  • Divide and transplant summer blooming perennials now and fertilize established ones as soon as new growth appears.
  • Fertilize tulips as foliage appears and make another application after flowering. Fertilize all other spring-flowering bulbs after flowering with bone meal or bulb booster.
  • If weeds appear in bulb beds, remove them by hand rather than using a tool that can damage the bulb base.
  • Remove mulch covers from roses, azaleas, clematis vines and other tender shrubs once nighttime temperatures rise into the 30s (but re-cover them if temperatures drop).

Before & After

Northampton Nursery - Enhanced & Inviting Front Entry Walk

The above pictures represent the Before & After of a front walkway we had the privilege to complete.

The homeowners had a stepping stone path, through a worn front landscape, from the driveway to the front patio.  After meeting with them to discuss their dreams and goals, we came up with a plan to enhance the look of the front of their home and create an inviting entry to the residence.

The transformation began by removing the old flagstone steppers and landscaping.  We then removed the old wooden steps to their porch and built new stone steps with a rounded landing using EP Henry pavers and wall block.  The curves in the new walkway provide a natural flow to the front porch.  The addition of a new landscape highlights the front of the home and new walkway, while providing seasonal interest and being low maintenance.

Ever thought about refreshing the front entry of your home?  Contact Northampton Nursery, and we will start helping turn your dreams into reality.  It is EASY to start the process, just reply to this email letting us know to contact you and we will.

Northampton Building Solutions - Bathroom Renovation

Creating the Bathroom You Enjoy!
You use your bathroom everyday, so make it a place you want to be.  Here are some thoughts on things you can do to create a space YOU ENJOY:

Go tubless:

The American Institute of Architects says that the tub-less bathroom is growing in popularity.  Its annual Home Design Trends Survey found that more than 60% of homeowners preferred a stall shower without a tub.

While many people feel you should have at least one bathtub in your home to maintain its marketability, the market may be changing.  Also, not every bathroom needs a bathtub, so go ahead and convert that old tub/shower combo into a cool walk-in shower in one of your bathrooms so you have a place YOU enjoy!

Added bonus, a cool walk-in shower is easier to step into and out of than having to step over the side of a traditional tub.

Radiant Floor Heat:

Thinking of putting new tile in your bathroom?  Now is the time to install radiant floor heat.

While ceramic tile can chill your tootsies, pairing it with radiant floor heat that goes under the tile will give you a nice warm floor.  Radiant heat is often more efficient than forced-air heating because it eliminates heat loss through the ducts, says the U.S. Department of Energy. It also distributes heat uniformly across the floor, taking less time to warm a room than other types of heat.

Pocket Door:

The floor area of many bathrooms is precious.  The typical swinging door can make a good portion of this precious space unusable.

pocket door slides into your wall, out of the way without requiring any clearance into the room, leaving more room for storage and design flexibility.

Tearing out drywall and reframing for a pocket door is not a small task but it just may help you get a little more usable space and a little closer to the bathroom YOU ENJOY.
