Planting Spring Bulbs

As Autumn approaches and temperatures begin to cool down, the time is right to think about planting Spring flowering bulbs.

Adding bulbs is a great way to add splashes of color to your landscape.  It's also a very easy.  Pick a spot in your landscape where you would like to add some Spring color, dig a little hole, drop in the bulbs, and cover it up.  Remember to plant the bulb with the pointy end up.

It's Time To...

Plant Trees and Shrubs for Spring

  • Fall is a good time to select and plant trees and shrubs. Fall planting encourages good root development, allowing the plants to get established before spring. If weather is dry, provide water up until the ground freezes.
  • As the weather cools, perennial flowers that have outgrown their space can be dug and divided, or moved to a new area of the garden. New or replacement perennials can also be planted this month.
  • Mark your perennials with permanent tags, or create a map showing their locations so you'll know where and what they are when they die back. This will help you to avoid digging up something you intended to keep later.
  • Winter pansies, flowering kale, flowering cabbage, and fall mums may be planted now to brighten the garden when summer flowers fade.
  • Feed evergreens and deciduous trees with a tree and shrub food. This product contains slow-release nitrogen, sulfate of potash, iron and other micro-nutrients for overall plant growth and development.

Kitchen update!

The above pictures show two Before & After views of a kitchen renovation we had the privilege to complete.

The homeowners had a kitchen that they were looking to update and they were looking to make better use of the space.  Removing the old cabinets and installing new cabinets was just one step in the process.  We added a new tile backsplash, with a nice mosiac behind the sink.  The new granite countertops and new tile flooring complete the refreshed look from floor to ceiling.  Extra storage is provided by the pantry cabinet next to the fridge.  Not seen in these pictures is a nice built in kitchen table, constructed of matching base cabinets and granite top.

They are enjoying their modern, functional kitchen with a classic look.

Tips from the Pros

Start getting your home ready for winter

We all know that maintaining your home is a year-round job. If we learned anything from last winter, getting ready for the arrival of the cold weather is important.  So, after you have turned off the AC, but before the cold arrives, here are some items for your to-do list:

  • Inspect your furnace. Replace dirty filters, and clean registers and grilles.
  • Use caulk, spray foam, and weather stripping to plug leaks around windows and doors.
  • Plug up holes where pipes, vents, or electrical conduits run through walls, ceilings, and floors.
  • Add fiberglass insulation to the attic floor and house walls.
  • Wrap your water heater with an insulation blanket (check with your owner's manual or the store first) and cover any exposed pipes with ready-made pipe jackets.
  • Clean gutters and downspouts to avoid ice dams that can push water under the shingles.
  • Make sure chimney and venting systems are working properly.
