Skin Matters

Along with the irritation of those little flying pests, our equine partners occasionally develop skin irritations that are not "bug" related. A wet spring and hot, dry summer can cause horses who haven't had issues in the past to develop some, and those with pre-existing conditions may have theirs aggravated. One of these conditions is scratches (also called mud fever, pastern dermatitis, greasy heels, cracked heels and dew poisoning).

Symptoms include: Painful papules on the pastern and fetlock which can become pus-filled.
Causes: Most often occurs when the horse's lower limbs are moist for a prolonged period of time.

When in doubt, check with your veterinarian.

Membership

Insurance - Member Named Perils
Spring is here and summer is just around the corner! Along with the change in the weather comes the risk of storms as well as increased wild animal activity.

While statistics aren't available for the number of horses killed annually by fire, lightning, windstorms or wild animals, it does happen. Adding on the Members Named Perils (MNP) insurance provides coverage to a maximum of $10,000 for any horse(s) you own in the event they were to die from one of the perils named in the policy. Losses are restricted to one claim per member year.

MNP can be added to your existing membership at any time. Simply log in and select "Add Insurance, Ride and Drive or Donations to Existing Alberta Equestrian Federation Membership" or call the AEF office at 1-877-463-6233 or 403-253-4411.

For more information on this coverage or any of the other optional coverages which can be added to your AEF Membership at any time, check out our Optional Insurance page or give Capri Insurance Equine Department a call directly at 1-800-670-1877.
