Horse's Fatal Infection Spurs Southern Alberta Stable Quarantine

Ashley Parker is still processing the sudden death of her horse Drop Dead Fred, also knows as Cory.

On Jan. 16, she said he started to act out of the ordinary.

"I went to put his halter on and he kind of stumbled and he went down, " Parker said. "I remember... just saying 'This is not good.'"

Within 36 hours of showing symptoms, Cory was dead. A veterinarian determined the cause was Strangles, a bacterial disease that usually targets horses under five-years-old.

Family or Individual Membership?

Have you ever asked yourself - should we be purchasing a Family Membership? Here are a few questions to consider:
  • Who rides?
  • Who owns the horse(s)?
  • Who handles the horse(s)?
  • Who transports the horse(s)?
  • What do you do with the horse(s) as a family?
  • How many family members are around horses?
  • Do you lease a horse? And if so, who signed the lease agreement?
If you answered just yourself to all of the above, the answer is to purchase an individual membership. If you answered yourself and two or more family members, you should purchase a family membership.

Click here to learn why a family membership might suit your needs more than an individual membership.

Recreation & Trails
Trail Supporter Funding Application Deadline -
May 15, 2016

The AEF Trail Supporter Fund (TSF) was established to provide support for AEF member clubs who have researched and planned a specific project related to the construction and/or maintenance of an equestrian trail, trailhead, or horse camping site in Alberta for public use. The fund over the past few years has totaled more than $25,000, allocated by the AEF board of directors, and increased annually by individual and corporate contributions.

The AEF money should be used as "seed funding" to obtain additional funding from other granting agencies. A review committee appointed by AEF will receive, review, and approve specific funding proposals. Submission deadline is May 15 of each year.

Click here to download the TSF application form.
