Coming This Fall To A Community Near You...

The Alberta Equestrian Federation, in association with Capri Insurance, are proud to reveal the first in a series of our Regional Presentations. Developed with our members in mind, these events will provide an opportunity for the AEF to reveal what we are really about, who we are, all that we have to offer our members and much more. We encourage participation and invite everyone, not just AEF members, to come out. This is your chance to learn as well as provide input, ideas or feedback to your organization!

The first release of these events will be on October 15th in Lethbridge, October 16th in Edmonton and October 17th in Grande Prairie. Location information will follow.

Feel free to contact Vanessa Morriss, Recreation & Industry Coordinator at recreation@albertaequestrian.com.

CAPRI Insurance Survey

Progress In Pain Recognition
By Jackie Bellamy-Zions, from the July 2015 Equine Guelph, Equine ENews

Hiding pain is one of the top survival skills of the horse.  An important part of horse ownership is learning to recognize the signs a horse may be in discomfort rather than dismissing certain subtle cues as just bad behavior.  Dr. Brianne Henderson recently gave a well-received lecture to a room full of horse owners in Hillsburgh, ON.  The attendees were interested in ensuring the welfare of their equine companions by honing their skills for detecting pain.

Equine Infectious Anemia
By Kathleen Winfield, for Alberta Horse Industry

You might have noticed that equine competitions and events are now beginning to request a negative result Coggins test as part of their requirements for entry into the competition or event.  If you frequently travel across international borders with equines you already know that a negative Coggins is required: but do you know why?  So - what is a Coggins test and what is it testing for?

Optional Accidental Death & Dismemberment (Optional AD&D) - $30

Summer time is a great time to be out enjoying or getting to know our equine partners, but with increased use or inexperience comes the risk of increased injury. A basic membership with the AEF already includes a $30,000 Accidental Death & Dismemberment policy (AD&D). An optional insurance available to our members (under age 75) is the optional AD&D including Fracture and Accidental Dental. This optional insurance provides an ADDITIONAL $50,000 in coverage and INCLUDES limited benefits for fracture and accidental dental arising from a horse related accident. The fracture and dental coverage pays up to a maximum of $5,000 each (maximum of $2,500 for fracture if a helmet is not worn at the time of the accident - so remember to wear those helmets!). $30 - a small price to pay for some great coverage!
Optional AD&D can be added to your existing membership at any time. Simply log in and select "Add Insurance, Ride and Drive or Donations to Existing Alberta Equestrian Federation Membership" or give us a call at the office (1-877-463-6233 or 403-253-4411). We would be happy to help you!

If you are signing up for a new membership or renewing your existing membership you can also add this optional insurance during your membership purchase.

For more information on this coverage or any of the other optional coverages which can be added to your AEF Membership at any time, check out our Optional Insurance page or the Capri Summary of Insurance, or give the equine department at Capri Insurance a call directly at 1-800-670-1877.

Recreation & Trails
Sharing The Roads in Alberta

Will you and your horse be heading to the open road this season? Maybe you'll be herding cattle or driving your new buggy to the neighbour's. Perhaps you'll be taking part in a charity event or just enjoying a ride down the road. Whatever your purpose may be, are you prepared? Do you know how to safely share the road with other vehicles?

The Alberta Equestrian Federation has developed a booklet to inform equestrians about the rules and regulations for riding on Alberta's public roadways.
