Horses Test Positive for Vesicular Stomatitis
Weld County, Colorado

Horses have tested positive for vesicular stomatitis (VS) in Weld County, Colorado on July 17, 2014. Vesicular Stomatitis is a reportable disease as per the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), meaning that horse owners must immediately report the presence of any horse suspected of being affected by the disease. The disease causes blister-like lesions to be formed on the inside of the mouth, nose and hooves, alongside flu like symptoms and anorexia.

The affected horses in Colorado have no history of travel. The facility was quarantined following the diagnosis. Cases have also been identified in the state of Texas in 2014. No cases have been suspected in Canada.  READ MORE

Road Safety

As many equestrians take to the roads, keeping themselves and their horses safe while sharing road space with cars, trucks, motorcycles and bicycles is a key concern for many horseback riders and horse & carriage drivers.

The AEF's Riding and Driving on Alberta's Roads handbook focuses on what you, the rider or driver, can do to increase your safety while road riding, and includes tips for the motorist to learn how to exercise appropriate caution. Pick up a complimentary copy today!

Alberta Sport Plan 2014-2024

On Thursday, July 24, Going the Distance: The Alberta Sport Plan 2014-2024 was released. The renewed Sport Plan was based on eight months of consultation through a provincial sport forum, regional meetings and an online survey that attracted 4,807 responses. The draft plan received further online input from an additional 400 Albertans.

Many individuals and organizations, including the AEF, were involved in the above consultations.

From consultation to implementation, the Alberta Sport Plan takes a collaborative approach to make our province a national leader in sport and to realize the positive impact of sport on people and communities.

"Alberta Sport Connection (ASC) is pleased to have been charged with implementing "Going the Distance: Alberta Sport Plan 2014-2024" on behalf of the government," says John Short, Alberta Sport Connection Chair.  "We are now working to develop a detailed and effective implementation plan. Recognizing that large numbers contribute to the Alberta sport system, it is necessary to increase alignment and collaboration, coordinating efforts and activities to achieve a common vision."
