Don't Ignore Your Horse's Hooves this Winter and Spring
Equine winter health tip

As many horse owners know, mid-winter brings snow and other forms of precipitation that often continue through the spring - and that can mean wet, muddy conditions for our equine companions.

For horses living outside, these conditions can lead to mud clods and ice balls in the hooves. Prolonged wet conditions may cause very soft feet that are susceptible to more serious problems, including hoof wall separation, thrush and sole abscesses.

This column was written by Dr. Luke Bass, a veterinarian with Colorado State University's Equine Field Service.

Having Staffing Whoa's?
by Kevin Haughton
As we head into the summer months, the need to ensure your business is staffed properly is top of mind. Whether you are hiring back trustworthy employees from years past, finding new staff to fill the ranks or continuing on with staff who have been with you a long time, the notion of compensation for your staff must also stay top of mind.

In order to have a healthy and productive workplace, you need to ensure that you are able to attract and retain the employees best suited for the specific needs of your business.

An excellent tool to assist in the attraction and retention of key employees is an employee benefits program. Employee benefits are an important component of your total compensation package for your employees which will also include vacation time and wages.

There are several advantages to offering a group benefits program to your staff:
  • Improved compensation plan to attract and retain the best candidates
  • Displays care and concern for your employees and their staff, which creates loyalty
  • Every dollar you spend on the program goes directly to the employee and is a write off for your business at the end of the year
  • Benefits are a much more tax efficient way of paying for expenses which we are going to incur anyway, like dental visits, drug claims, ambulance rides etc.
So as you are planning your strategy for hiring staff this year consider how a group benefit program can work with you to support your goals.

Now is the time for your AEF member club to make plans for a project
to help build, repair or improve a trail, or to create or improve a horse
camping site. You'll need to have your plans and permissions in place,
including the expected budget for your project. Keep in mind that if you
have potential funding, it is much easier to get your local or regional lands manager on board.

Applications will be accepted between
January 1st and May 15, 2014.

Please support the efforts of the clubs who volunteer to undertake these projects by donating any amount to the AEF Trail Supporter Fund when you renew your AEF membership. Just a few dollars from every member will make a huge difference!
