P'tit Trot is a riding book designed for children 5 years of age and over. It is also a teaching program which allows children to learn the basics of English and Western riding with a horse or a pony, and to understand its world. Generously illustrated and divided into four levels, P'tit Trot's amusing comments and the presence of fun characters makes initiation to riding simple. Everything has been done to help children discover on their own the ABC's of riding and basic care of horses and ponies. However, the child can simultaneously explore riding at an equestrian centre, under the supervision of a qualified professional. An instructor will help the student learn all the notions presented in each chapter of the book. The instructor validates the knowledge acquired by presenting the child with a diploma for each level completed: bronze horseshoe; silver horseshoe; gold horseshoe; platinum horseshoe.
For more Information, visit: P'tit Trot webpage or to order: go to our online store |

New Trail Riding and Tourism Certification program
 | National Trail Rider and Guide certification pathway |
Starting June 2014 - For the first time, Equine Canada (EC) will deliver a Trail Riding and Equestrian Tourism certification program across Canada.
EC is currently seeking trail riding and outdoor horseback enthusiasts and adventurers to implement and deliver the program. The first evaluation of certified Guides and Trail Riding Instructors will be held June 2014, in the eastern provinces, and in September 2014 in the western provinces.
This evaluation is targeted at experienced Riders, Guides, Outfitters, and Instructors or Coaches looking to teach horsemanship, trail riding, and guiding with a holistic learning approach. The certified Guide/Instructor will be able to deliver these basic lessons to beginners using EC learning material.
A Guide to Basic Horsemanship and Trail Riding in Canada is the reference manual that comes with the basic learning levels. The learning plans for the trail riding programs are available on EC's web page.
Those who succeed in meeting the qualifications for this evaluation will receive a certificate from Equine Canada to demonstrate that they have met the standard to be recognized as competent equestrian tourism Guide and/or trail riding Instructors.
Certification is the only way our equestrian industry has to reach out to the public and promote certified and qualified Guides, Instructors and Coaches for more safety.
More information to come soon. Please visit the EC Recreation pages for more info

Support horses on AB Trails with your contribution
AEF Trail Supporter Fund
The AEF Trail Supporter Fund, formerly known as Trail Supporter Program, was created to preserve access to AB trails and to give everybody the opportunity to enjoy our vast trail network and camp with their horses.
Everyone who enjoys this freedom must do their part to ensure that this access is continued. The AEF Trail Supporter Fund supports the efforts of AB trail builders by making funds available to support the development, maintenance and improvement of horse friendly trails, campsites and staging areas throughout the province. Many areas in Southern Alberta sustained heavy damage from the floods last summer and repairs are still needed.
If you care about the future of equestrian access to AB trails, please become a Trail Supporter. Contribute to the AEF Trail Supporter Fund. Every dollar helps! |
Horse Owner Survey
Dear Horse Owners,
I am a fourth year student at the University of Alberta and am currently enrolled in Animal Science 496, completing a study regarding horse owner knowledge in Alberta. One of the goals of this class is to design and distribute a survey assessing horse owner knowledge and complete a report on the results. It would be greatly appreciated if you could forward this email to any horse owners you may know, or members of your association, as well as post it to your website or social media (Facebook, Twitter or blog). Your participation would play a significant role in the success of this project. Thanks again if you have already completed the survey, we are currently re-distributing it to include all horse owners in Alberta.
To complete the short survey (it should take about 10 minutes), please click on this link:

This project has been approved by the Research Ethics Board at the University of Alberta. If you would like more information on the project, please contact me, Danielle Ostapek,ostapek@ualberta.ca, or our instructor, Connie Varnhagen, varn@ualberta.ca.

Cold and still can equal stiff
Below freezing temperatures can make hibernation look tempting but inactivity in horses can lead to many issues.
-
- Shivering seniors
If your senior steed is looking cold this winter, it may be time to feed more fibre and consider a blanket.
-
Hair raising experiences Beware the dangers of throwing a winter blanket on a sweaty horse. If your horse is not clipped, cooling out time will increase. Horses' lose the ability to insulate themselves against the cold when hair is wet and laying flat. More tips...

Samantha Starratt Takes Team Gold at 2013 FEI Children's International Classics Final in Brazil
Article Subtitle
 | Samantha Starratt of Calgary, AB represented Canada at the 2013 FEI Children's International Classics Final in Brazil, helping earn Team Gold and taking 11th place individually. |
Samantha Starratt of Calgary, AB represented Canada at the 2013 FEI Children's International Classics Final, held in Brasilia, BRA Dec. 10-15, 2013.
Paired with the borrowed mount, GB Rupina, a 16-year-old Dutch Warmblood mare owned by Elisangela Nassif, Starratt finished in 11th place individually and was part of the Gold Medal Team.
In the first qualifier, Starratt had just one rail for four faults. She followed up with a double-clear performance in the second qualifying round, finishing the class in fifth place, which made her the top-placed foreign rider of the day.
"I felt honored to represent Canada at the FEI Children's Final and compete with other top riders my age," commented Starratt. "I felt prepared for the event by the horsemanship skills taught to me by my trainer, Lynne Stephenson, over the past four and a half years I have been at Concorde Stables."
At the completion of the two qualifiers, Starratt, along with fellow team members Thales Gabriel De Lima and Henry Hardman of Brazil, and Bautista Tassara of Argentina, earned the Team Gold Medal on a perfect score of zero. This was made possible because three of the four team members went clear in each qualifier, and the rules of the final allow for one score to be dropped in each round. Read more...
