P'tit Trot is a riding book designed for children 5 years of age and over. It is also a teaching program which allows children to learn the basics of English and Western riding with a horse or a pony, and to understand its world. Generously illustrated and divided into four levels, P'tit Trot's amusing comments and the presence of fun characters makes initiation to riding simple. Everything has been done to help children discover on their own the ABC's of riding and basic care of horses and ponies. However, the child can simultaneously explore riding at an equestrian centre, under the supervision of a qualified professional. An instructor will help the student learn all the notions presented in each chapter of the book. The instructor validates the knowledge acquired by presenting the child with a diploma for each level completed: bronze horseshoe; silver horseshoe; gold horseshoe; platinum horseshoe.
For more Information, visit: P'tit Trot webpage or to order: go to our online store |

Over 500 calls to ALERT LINE
A valuable service to the Livestock industry
In 1995 producers requested it. Today the Alberta Farm Animal Care (AFAC) ALERT Line (1-800-506-2273) is an integral part of the province's livestock industry. "Producers were asking for an alternative service where the public could report any suspected animal care concerns in a confidential way, and enable producers themselves to get some help. We know animal welfare is a growing public concern - agriculture is definitely under scrutiny. The ALERT service also helps to educate the public," says Pam Miller ALERT Line coordinator.
AFAC has established resource leaders and team members across the province to respond to situations arising from ALERT Line calls. "The ALERT Resource Team members have successfully nipped problems in the bud, providing practical hands-on advice to improve animal care and support responsible producers when the public calls were unfounded," adds Miller.
Last year over 500 calls were received at the ALERT Line. Of those, 88 cases were investigated that required some form of intervention. Miller explains that when a call comes in the ALERT coordinator determines the nature of the call. "If the caller is unfamiliar with agricultural practices the coordinator will provide information that will enable them to better understand the situation they were calling about. We receive a lot of calls that are unfounded. More and more, ALERT has become a source of information."
