P'tit Trot

P'tit Trot is a riding book designed for children 5 years of age and over.
It is also a teaching program which allows children to learn the basics of English and Western riding with a horse or a pony, and to understand its world.
Generously illustrated and divided into four levels, P'tit Trot's amusing comments and the presence of fun characters makes initiation to riding simple. Everything has been done to help children discover on their own the ABC's of riding and basic care of horses and ponies.
However, the child can simultaneously explore riding at an equestrian centre, under the supervision of a qualified professional. An instructor will help the student learn all the notions presented in each chapter of the book. The instructor validates the knowledge acquired by presenting the child with a diploma for each level completed: bronze horseshoe; silver horseshoe; gold horseshoe; platinum horseshoe.

Congratulations Meghan Black
First Ride and Drive Member to reach 2000 hours!

We would like to congratulate AEF member Meghan Black, as our first Ride and Drive participant to reach 2000 logged hours!

Meghan is a Geology Masters student at the University of Alberta and has been working hard in between writing her thesis to log hours in the saddle. Her horse Sunny, or Winning Sonita Bar, is a 13 year old 15.1hh Sorrel Quarter Horse Mare, and April will mark 10 years together for the two. It took time and dedication, but they managed to log another 1000 hours in the saddle since the end of 2011, putting them at 2000 hours!  Sunny and Meghan focus on training, practicing and improving to compete in the all-around events at Open Shows in southern Alberta.

"It is great that AEF offers the Ride and Drive program to acknowledge all the hard work and time that goes into riding, whether you show or compete with your horse or not. Nothing beats heading out to the barn at the end of the day to unwind and have fun with my horse! Here's to another 1000 hours and unlimited fun ahead!" -Meghan Black

Olds College Equine Alumni Celebrate with the

Equine Centennial Games

The Equine Centennial Games have been planned to honour the role of equine programming in the history of Olds College as part of the celebrations for the Olds College Centennial Anniversary in

2013. The Games have been organized with equine alumni in mind. They are an opportunity for past students of all equine programming to come back to the college and relive those wonderful college days. The Games, scheduled for April 30, May 1 and 2, include three days of activities that will provide opportunities for all alumni to be involved.

April 30- Full day clinic given by well known Centered Riding clinician, Peggy Brown. She will spend most of the day doing demonstrations and audience participation activities but has left some time for an English and a Western riding clinic. This day will end with a Wine and Cheese reception for all Games participants.

May 1 and 2- Performance portion of the games. Alumni will compete in teams of three: an English rider, a Western rider and a Jeopardy player. The riding component of the games will be completely free style. There will be jumps/obstacles with incremental values set up in the arena as well as required maneuvers to be performed. Each rider will have three minutes to ride. How riders incorporate the jumps/obstacles and the maneuvers and what more they add will be totally up to them. Creativity and enthusiasm are encouraged for this event. The Jeopardy component of the Games is based on the classic TV show and will require some thought and preparation. It will include information that was taught in the equine programs as well as some questions about Olds College itself.

The entire event will wrap up with a celebration and awards luncheon at noon on May 2 in the college Alumni Center.

The Olds College Equine Centennial Games promises to be a fabulous, fun event for equine alumni and a wonderful opportunity for them to revisit the college and to help celebrate our 100th anniversary. For more information, contact Marion Anderson at (403)556-3869 or manderson@oldscollege.ca or visit our Facebook page Olds College Equine Centennial Games. Registration forms are available on the Olds College website www.oldscollege.ca under 2013 Centennial Events, Centennial Shop.
