Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA)
Word from Woodwedge Cogitations on EIA Franklin Lowe in his book "Vet in the Saddle" spins a good account of the NWMP march west in 1874, and specifically the role played by John Luke Poet, the Veterinary Surgeon accompanying the trek, and the man who did his best to keep the horses alive and healthy. The horses, bred in the east, proved unsuitable and inadequate for the task. Long marches, heavy loads including drawing artillery, inadequate and poor feed, adverse weather, unfamiliar climate, disease and lack of medical supply resulted in failing condition and the loss of many horses. Poet described what he called "typhoid", but which we now know was "swamp fever" as resulting in the loss of condition and death of many horses. Treatment with "carbolic" was ineffective then, as is any treatment attempted today, 137 years later.....and we're still plagued with the disease, despite vigorous control and eradication efforts over several decades. Equine Infectious Anaemia (EIA) remains a reportable disease under the Health of Animals Act and Regulations. A compensation program exists, partially funded by Coggins fees paid by owners to have their equines tested. Positive equines ordered destroyed generate payment up to a maximum based on value. Although there have been changes to the federal program over the years, input from the industry has been invited prior to any adjustments to policy...and as with any program, review and future changes may be in the offing. In our diverse horse world, there are several camps, some pro, others ambivalent, and others reluctant to participate in the EIA program. The debate continues, however where the industry good is considered, if you suspect you have swamp fever in horses you own or manage, the obligation to test and report is there. To not do so, and thereby hold others to ransom by exposing their stock to infected and sometimes inapparent carriers is unconscionable. We need everyone pulling together to move forward. It is important for EIA to remain as a reportable disease with full commitment to the program by the industry and the regulator. Although great strides have been made through testing and elimination of positive animals from the population, it is critical that we maintain and advance on what we have gained. Testing statistics from 1993 through to 2011 strongly support this stance. The USA maintains a vigorous and uncompromising testing program using the Coggins test, and despite numbers ten times that of Canada, have virtually eradicated EIA from their equine population. Protection from EIA hinges on knowledge, awareness, good stable and pasture management, a sound bio-security program, including testing/isolation of introductions to your band. We trust fellow equestrians will inform themselves and think this one through. The question will be asked. B.W.R. Rothwell, D.V.M. For more information on Biosecurity and other reportable equine diseases visit the AEF website here:
