Two Horses Confirmed Infected with Vesicular Stomatitis (VS) in New Mexico (NM), United States - Import Restrictions Updated
May 3, 2012-Two horses in the state of New Mexico, Otero County, were confirmed with Vesicular Stomatitis (VS) on April 20, 2012. This is the first detection of active VS in the United States since 2010.
The World Organization for Animal Health has posted a notification on its web site at:
http://bit.ly/IJcDah.
Canada is currently free of vesicular stomatitis. It was last diagnosed in Canada in 1949. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has notified Equine Canada it is taking the following immediate action to safeguard the Canadian herd:
* The importation of horses from the State of New Mexico will be prohibited (except for Canadian horses returning from New Mexico, please see below) until further notice.
* For horses coming from the United States, from all other states, the following requirement, which will need to be certified by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), applies: During the previous twenty-one (21) days, the animal(s) in this shipment has/have not been in the state of New Mexico.
* For Canadian horses going to and returning from the United States: Horses coming from New Mexico already need an import permit due to piroplasmosis concerns and clients therefore cannot bring their horses back to Canada from New Mexico on the original Canadian export certificate. Instead, it is necessary that they bring their animals back to Canada with an import permit and a USDA health certificate containing *supplementary certification. OR Move their horses to **alternate states and establish residency in that state for at least 21 days prior to export to Canada. In that case, the horses will be returning to Canada on a USDA health certificate that includes a statement for non-residency in New Mexico during the last 21 days prior to export to Canada (i.e. During the previous twenty-one (21) days, the animal(s) in this shipment has/have not been in the state of New Mexico).

A Request from Equine Canada:
Survey: Strategic Plan, Foundational Statements Validation
Dear Equine Canada member:
Over the past several months, we have been engaging members in a series of consultative discussions to review the organization's current foundational statements and to determine future priorities. To date, more than 150 individuals representing various perspectives have been engaged in reviewing and refining the key elements of the organization's future strategic plan. The meeting reports from both the November and February planning sessions are available on Equine Canada's website at www.equinecanada.ca.
We are now at the point where we want to validate our foundational statements and to provide you, our members, with the opportunity to help us ensure that we have accurately captured the essential components that should be contained in each of the following statements. While there may be different ways of stating it, we want to hear to what extent you believe that the following statement capture the critically important components of Equine Canada's story so that both internal and external stakeholders have a clear sense of who we are, where we are going, and what we believe in the most.
This survey should take approximately 10 minutes to complete. The Strategic Planning Committee thanks you for participating in this survey.

ATTENTION: CERTIFIED COACHES/INSTRUCTORS
The Calgary Stampede Light Horse Committee would welcome proposals from western and english certified coaches to participate in Horse Haven at the Calgary Stampede by giving short demonstrations in designated breed booths on:
- Saddling/Unsaddling a horse
- Health Checks
- Conformation
The intended audience for these demonstrations are people of all ages who are new to horses but may be interested for themselves or their kids. In all of our programming and displays in Horse Haven, the Light Horse Committee's goal is to educate people about horses and to promote horses and riding as a lifelong recreational and leadership opportunity for all ages. They intend for the demonstrations to take place in Horse Haven, utilizing the space occupied by the breeds, and using these horses for the demos. The demos (approx 20-30 minutes with time for Q & A) would take place at scheduled times throughout each day, for the duration of the Stampede (July 6-15, 2012).
They are aiming for approximately three demos per day.
Interested coaches can contact Lisa Hardy at lisajhardy@gmail.com for more information, or to volunteer.

Help us Grow our "Herd" of Programs
Please consider a donation to the Alberta Equestrian Federation. All amounts big or small qualify for the AEF's application to the Alberta Community Spirit Donation Grant to match your donation amount.
The donation grant provides an opportunity for eligible non-profit organizations to receive a provincial grant. The grant is based on total annual cash donations from individual Albertans that have been received by an eligible organization over a 12-month fiscal period. The grant can be used to support an organization's operations, programs and/or capital projects. The maximum grant available is $25,000 up to a maximum of $50,000 over three years. A minimum total of $1,000 in eligible cash donations needs to be received prior to applying for a grant.
This grant goes toward supporting our programs and educational scholarships given out each year to AEF members.
The AEF will apply for a matching government grant, which effectively doubles any contribution from an individual. Help us reach our goal of raising $10,000 in cash donations this year.
Help us grow our "herd" of great programs. Together we can make a difference in Alberta for our equine community.
