The young Nemorino has a dead-end job, is hardly noticed by the ladies, and is hopelessly in love with Adina, who's indifferent to him. She wants to marry Sergeant Belcore. Nemorino thinks he doesn't stand a chance with Adina. Enter Dr. Dulcamara, a huckster, a con man, and a charmer who whips up an "elixir" (really a bad Bordeaux) that turns Nemorino into a real-life Don Giovanni.
