Caring for neighbors in need
Yikes... Shiny new bikes!

This coming Sunday, August 3, at Rock Cat Stadium in New Britain, a group of children, ages 6 through 10, will be presented with a long string of brand new eye-popping bicycles, thanks to Barnum Financial Group's Foundation for Life
Bikes for Kids Program.  Ten of those special children were selected because of their parents' association with the Friendship Service Center.

The mission of the Foundation for Life is to improve the quality of life for people and families through actions that promote change and deepen connections within the community.  Since its inception in 2006, the Foundation for Life has supported hundreds of organizations throughout the Northeast that are working to better the lives of those in need throughout the community.

High honors
Linda Powers Tomasso
Congratulations to long-time Friendship Center supporter and volunteer Linda Powers Tomasso, the 2014 recipient of Harvard University's prestigious Derek Bok Public Service Prize.  The annual award recognizes a Harvard graduate for creative initiatives in community service or long-standing records of civic achievement among graduates.

The Derak Bok Public Service Prize comes with a monetary award which Tomasso has generously donated to the Friendship Service Center.  "Linda has been and continues to be a staunch advocate for the Friendship Center and those we serve," said Ellen Perkins Simpson, Executive Director.  "Her decision to honor us by using her monetary award to help others is testimony to her civic mindedness and compassion.  We are most grateful."

As president of Harvard (1971-1991), and interim president (2006-2007), Derek Bok was a vocal advocate for student participation in public-service programs. By the end of his presidency, more than 60 percent of Harvard undergraduates were engaged in some form of public service.
