THE APRIL BLOW-BY-BLOW

Greetings!
Tofino, Vancouver Island
Welcome to a special "Green Newsletter" for April, a whole month dedicated to making boating more environmentally friendly. As boaters ourselves, we understand your interest in maintaining the health of the Earth's waterways and oceans.

This month, we've got plenty of tips, green products, learn-how articles, and some discussion points that will hopefully get you primed for an eco-friendly boating season in 2011!
New Feature: Green Products!

Our New Eco LogoPride Marine is happy to announce that we've made it easier to identify environmentally friendly products on our web site; from now on, look for our "Eco logo"!

This logo indicates that either the product is biodegradable or recyclable, offers fuel/energy savings, prevents environmental damage, or is significantly more environmentally friendly than competing products.

We've started by adding 48 Eco products to our Featured Items list found on our Home Page.

Alternative Energy Strategies

Solar Panels in ParadiseWhat's better than having solar panels and wind generator harness the elements to provide plentiful electricity? The answer is, enjoying your favourite music and an ice cold margarita that were made possible by your solar panels and wind generator!

If you're headed to sea or to a multi-day anchorage, you'll just love having Solar Power or Wind Power. If you're a novice on the technology, read both articles to learn how they work and what you'll need!
Antifouling: Is there another way?

ePaint SunwaveOne of the stickiest issues in making boating more environmentally friendly is often the topic of antifouling. There's little doubt that antifouling is pretty complicated stuff, but it's so effective. Luckily, some great alternatives are becoming available, and often with significant price savings.

Want to learn how you can give antifouling the boot? Check out our Antifouling Alternatives page.

Soybean Boats - Are Bio-Resins Really the Future of Fibreglass?

The Soyboat!Currently, boats are constructed from a melange of industrial plastics that will most likely end up in a landfill for near-eternity. However, there are some small revolutions happening in the shipyards, such as resins made from soybean oil (and other food crops), as well as making boats more recyclable. Is this a step in the right direction? Learn more about the future of fibreglass yachts on our Polyester Resin page.

Raymarine A-SeriesChartplotters aren't really eco-products per se, but if they prevent you from crashing into pristine islands, then maybe they count!

Preventing Fuel Spills

Pump & FillThere is no doubt that we can always do a better job at preventing fuel and oil from spilling into the water. What's your battle plan? Here are some tips:
  • Install a fuel whistle on your fuel vent hose
  • Never pour fuel from jerry cans into your tank. Use a self-priming siphon hose or the Pump & Fill (shown on the left)
  • Fill up slowly and resist the temptation to overfill your tank. Those extra few tablespoons won't get you too far anyway!
  • Wrap an oil absorbing cloth around the nozzle, lay one around your deck fill.
  • Do not squirt soap on any sheens! It causes oil to sink into the water column, rather than evaporating. Instead, throw extra absorbing cloths on the spills, soak up and dispose the cloths properly.
New Feature: Monthly Poll Question

New and Improved! Yay!Starting this month, we'll be adding a poll question to each newsletter. We'll tally the results and publish the totals in our next issue. To participate, simply click on the link you like best!

This month's question is.. "Which of the following environmentally-sound boating habits would you most likely practice this summer?"

-   Collecting trash and flotsam from anchorages/beaches you visit

-   Avoiding water contamination (from fuel spills, bilge oil, sewage)

-   Reducing noise pollution

Reducing your consumption of fuel and/or electricity

-  Generating wind/solar power

-  Purchasing green/biodegradable products

Thanks for participating!
