 Greetings!

We are dedicating this issue of our TRSP newsletter to veterans. Reiki as well as other forms of energy healing is very effective in helping our vets deal with many of the challenges they face during their deployments as well as when they are discharged from the service.  Read on to learn more about veterans and Reiki.
Reiki for Veterans

Members of the armed forces who have been deployed overseas, most recently in Iraq and Afghanistan, may come home wounded both physically and mentally.  They can have serious bodily injuries as well as post-traumatic stress disorder. Symptoms of PTSD can include insomnia, nightmares, hyperarousal, irritability, poor concentration, depression, and isolation.

The military, the Veteran's Administration and other service organizations are seeking innovative ways to help returning military personnel deal with wounds to the body, mind, and spirit.  An interdisciplinary approach which includes complementary healing modalities is being successfully implemented in many parts of the country to help veterans.

Reiki is one of the complementary therapies that is being used effectively to help veterans begin to heal as they return home to their families and communities.  Reiki can elicit the relaxation response; decrease pain; calm emotions; clear the mind; and help to release trauma.  Reiki is also easy to learn for self-treatment.

The following article describes a successful Reiki program for veterans in Seattle.  Reiki Resources for Veterans

Reiki Helps Homeless Veterans is a short video in which Heather McCutcheon movingly captures veterans responding to their first Reiki sessions.  They describe feeling "tranquil", "at peace", and "more relaxed".  One veteran said that Reiki was "phenomenal".

This video was taken at the Stand Down that was held in Chicago in June, 2013.  These events are organized by the Department of Veteran Affairs throughout the country for the purpose of providing services to homeless veterans, e.g., food, clothing, health care, benefits counseling, and community referrals.

Heather, a Reiki Master, spearheaded this outreach initiative to bring Reiki services to veterans attending this Stand Down.  Volunteers from the Midwest Reiki Community offered free 10 minute Reiki sessions to over 90 veterans.
Healing Sessions for Vets at Soldier Field

On August 11, 2013 Reiki and Healing Touch Practitioners joined together at Soldier Field in Chicago to bring healing services to veterans and their families.  This event was part of the annual Welcome Home / Valor Games for veterans. We offered over 125 sessions throughout the afternoon.  The following pictures tell the story of this very busy day!

Reiki Outreach for Veterans

If you know of any veteran service organizations that would be interested in sponsoring Reiki services and classes for veterans, please contact The Reiki Share Project for more information. There are many practitioners within the Chicagoland Reiki community who are interested in providing support and healing opportunities for our veterans.
Thank you for reading our newsletter and let's all work together to take care of our veterans and their families.

Sincerely,
Jane
