Independence House to Bring Nationally Acclaimed Advocate to Cape Cod for the 16th Annual Community Breakfast during Domestic Violence Awareness Month |
"William Kellibrew, global advocate for human, civil, children and victims' rights
joins Independence House as Keynote Speaker for Children Who Witness Violence"
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Hyannis, MA, September 14, 2016 - The 16th annual Domestic Violence Awareness Month community breakfast hosted by Independence House will be held on Friday, October 14, 2016 at the Double Tree by Hilton in Hyannis from 8:00-10:00am. This year's focus is Children Who Witness Violence.
William Kellibrew, a global advocate for human, civil, children and victims' rights will be the keynote speaker. William's story is one of resiliency and hope. A Child Witness to Violence survivor from age 10 when he witnessed the murders of his mother and brother, Kellibrew's mission is to make a difference in the lives of others with a special focus on the safety, protection and wellness of children, youth and families. Kellibrew works closely with top leaders to address trauma, violence, abuse and neglect across multiple fields including local, state, and federal agencies, Native American reservations and communities, non-profit organizations, businesses and community leaders in order to serve individuals, families and communities. In 2011, Kellibrew was recognized by the White House as a 'Champion of Change', in 2013, he received the Voice Award from SAMHSA for his work across the country as a peer/consumer leader. In 2014, he accepted the Capitol Probe Award at the District of Columbia Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, in 2015 he received the U.S. Congressional Victims' Rights Caucus Eva Murillo Unsung Hero Award, and in 2016 he received the Ruby Campbell-Pulliam Love You More Award.
The program also includes a survivor speaker, and concludes with a candlelight ceremony in remembrance of homicide victims of intimate partner violence in Massachusetts this past year.
The annual Domestic Violence Awareness Month Community Breakfast is an Independence House signature event offered to the public to inspire actions, educate the community, support survivors and respond to the issues of domestic and sexual violence. Independence House is proud to announce Cape Cod Five Cents Savings Bank Charitable Foundation is the presenting sponsor for this year's annual breakfast.
Attendance is complimentary and requires an RSVP reservation. Invitations are extended to all community residents, business members, survivors of domestic or sexual violence, and persons interested in aligning with the Independence House mission to end domestic and sexual violence in our community. Significant restricted funds increased to Independence House will help sexual assault services to children in our community |
Domestic and sexual violence are not limited to any particular ethnicity, race, religion, class or nationality. One only needs to read the newspapers, watch the news, connect to any social media outlet or talk with any of the survivors we work with at Independence House on a daily basis if there is any doubt about this fact. The Independence House team comes together every day with a unified mission and shared sense of purpose of our work together for and with survivors of domestic and sexual violence to bring about positive change and response to domestic and sexual violence. We have a shared commitment to supporting survivors, preventing domestic and sexual violence and fundamentally contributing to an improved quality of life for adult and children survivors. We are told often that there is a strong sense of positive energy and caring that is transmitted from all of our staff at all our locations across the Cape.
All of this work and positive energy is possible because of the commitment of the staff, all the relationships, partnerships and collaborations we have fostered for 37 years...and of course funding. Independence House is fortunate to expand our responses to survivors of domestic and sexual violence as a result of recent significant increases in our funding through MOVA VOCA funds (through the 1984 VOCA grant from OVC, OJP, U.S.D.O.J. and the Victims of Crime Act). One of the elements of our expansion that we are particularity pleased to share is our dedicated services to provide unlimited free advocacy and counseling to children who are victims of sexual assault. Through this expanded funding, we have hired a Child Trauma Specialist who will focus 100% on building this program and providing quality counseling response to children who are sexually assaulted. As an agency that frequently receives inquiries for child sexual assault services, this position increases our capacity to respond to the needs of these children and their non-offending caregiver, parent or guardian. Our work will be limited to addressing only the aftermath of sexual assault and we will continue to collaborate with our community partners who address other important and critical aspects of child sexual assault. We are privileged that this funding has filled a need that we lacked the resources to meet before; and we now serve survivors of sexual assault across the lifespan from 6 years old to 79 years old. In addition, this increased funding has also resulted in significant increase of our staffing Cape-wide to robustly meet the needs of survivors of domestic and sexual violence.
