Principal's Message

Greetings!

I hope that all DES families are enjoying a fun and relaxing summer!  It's been tough to beat the heat, but that's summer in Georgia!  We are in the process of registering new students and cleaning the building in preparation for school start-up in just a couple of weeks.  I extend a huge "thank you" to our PTO co-presidents who have been working hard to organize our Open House and beginning-of-year events!

Over the summer, we have had a few resignations and retirements as life takes people on different journeys.  Ms. Seabrook, one of our Assistant Principals, has accepted a promotion with the school system.  We are happy to announce that Mrs. Avis Mooneyham will be serving as the new DES Assistant Principal serving grades 3-5.  Mrs. Mooneyham was formally Ms. Holbrook, and she taught second grade at DES.  Welcome home, Mrs. Mooneyham!

Other teachers and staff members leaving DES include Ms. LaShanda Nelson, second grade teacher, Mrs. Carol Lincoln, SPED paraprofessional, and Mrs. Isia Kemp, SPED teacher.  We will miss our colleagues, but we wish them well on all their endeavors.  All positions have been filled, and we look forward to the new ideas and excitement that new employees bring.

With our growing school population, we have added two trailers to our existing inventory.  The trailers will serve as classroom space for our ESOL classes.  The trailers are shiny new and fabulous!  They are located just outside of the STEM lab and will have easy access to the building and restrooms.

Also, I'd like to send a huge, huge thank you to the PTO and DES community for the interior painting of our hallways and stairwells!  The painting included repair of damaged sheet rock and cinder block holes.  It was evident that our building needed some TLC after constant activity for six years.  Let's all work together to keep it looking nice as long as possible!

As I wrap up my summer comments, I remind everyone that our teachers are so very excited about the opportunities the new school year brings.  All teachers want to inspire the future, and every now and again, a teacher truly makes a difference in the life of a child.  Whether they are struggling emotionally or academically, there is the one teacher who takes the extra time to provide support, love, and encouragement.  It is this teacher who lives in our hearts forever.  Mrs. Mach and Ms. Nugent have been these teachers for two DES students.  Dr. David Goodchild has graciously made a significant financial contribution to the school in honor of these teachers and their dedication.

Job satisfaction and joy comes from knowing that we have exceeded parents' expectations, and that we have inspired a child to be more than they thought they could be.  I hope that we inspire all the children of DES this year!

Jennifer Sanders,
Principal, Dunwoody Elementary School

Registration Day Information:

Though it seems like summer just started, registration day is right around the corner!  We look forward to seeing all students and parents on Wednesday, August 3 from 7:30-11:30am.  During this time, parents can ensure that forms required by DeKalb County are filed and correct while students reconnect with friends, shop spirit wear, drop off school supplies, and meet their teachers!

In an effort to raise money for the Tiger Fund as well as to limit long lines, you are able to pre-register from home!  By completing this step AND donating $150 to the Tiger Fund, your family will receive a Fast Pass that allows entry into a separate line.  Moreover, once the pre-registration is completed AND $150 donated, only the Proof of Residency and Transportation lines are necessary on Registration Day.

Please be sure to sign up for or update your information for the Online School Directory as well!

Also, payment of the requested $35 per student of Annual Dues will provide your child with the official DES shirt for 2016-2017!  Teachers are requesting that each student have one of these shirts to help to ensure safety on field trips!  These shirts may also be worn for spirit days and stem days throughout the year.  You will be able to pick your shirts up on Registration Day!

Please bring with you:
  • Proof of residency; you will need an original and one photocopy per child of at least one utility bill (gas, electric or water only) or a signed leasing agreement or mortgage contract to verify that you are at the appropriate school.  Find more information here:  http://dunwoodyes.dekalb.k12.ga.us/RegistrationInformation.aspx
  • Photo Identification (original and photocopy)
  • Check book/credit card/cash (for PTO registration if not already done, club registration, and spirit wear)
  • *NEW* Your license plate number (to receive a carpool number)
  • Your school supplies (find lists here: http://dunwoodyes.dekalb.k12.ga.us/SupplyLists.aspx)
We look forward to another great year at DES!  Thanks so much for your support, and please let us know if you have any questions!  Many thanks to Andrew Ziffer, our Technology chair, for the countless hours spent over the summer working on the online registration!
