Principal's Message

Greetings!

Earlier I wrote that we will be losing four seasoned DES teachers (Erves, Y. Miller, Davis, Leymann).  Additionally, we are gaining 5 classes due to increased enrollment and larger grades rolling up to the next grade.  It has been a busy spring with panel interviews, but I believe our team has made great choices for our 2016-2017 teaching staff.  We've also made some internal moves that will strengthen our program in many ways.  Some of the teaching assignments you can expect are as follows:
  • PK - Morris and Moss
  • Kindergarten - Young, Drennan, Johnston, Culbreth, Madden, Risinger, Wimberly, Kundmueller, Dunn, Crigger (new)
  • Grade 1 - Hogue, Smith, Goodwin, Weimann, Pannullo, Knight, Carroll, Schaffner, Shelton
  • Grade 2 - Mach, Nelson, Jones, Janney, St. John, Brasher, Na (new), Blair
  • Grade 3 - Mendel/Hollander, Goodman/Mimms (new), Birrell/Abbott (new), McDougal/Mack (new)
  • Grade 4 - Lenahan/Sampson, Unger/Nugent/TBA (new)
  • Grade 5 - Soucy, Leftwich, Powers, Saltman

We are scheduled to receive two additional trailers which will house our ESOL program and our instructional support program.  These teachers will also have small group space in the building as needed.  Of course, these assignments may change if our student numbers increase or decrease.  The aim, though, is to keep all grade level classes together to optimize teacher collaboration.

Our planning process is just beginning, but I know the community likes to know teacher changes as soon as possible.  Please keep in mind that these placements may change even though it's unlikely at this point.

Principal, Dunwoody Elementary School

DES Community:

This year has passed so quickly!  We hope that you have learned a great deal, made some new friends, and that you have an enjoyable summer with your friends and family!  Thank you so much to all of the teachers and support staff who make DES a safe environment for our children to succeed academically!  Because of your participation in Annual Dues as well as donations to the Tiger Fund, the PTO is able to give a cash gift to all DES staff!  Thank you for your generosity!  It is so appreciated by the staff!

Thanks so much to Mrs. Miller, Ms. Esartia, Ms. Janney, and Mr. Ennis for a fabulous showing of Aladdin!  These directors along with the talented cast have been working since December to produce the terrific shows!Congratulations on a job well done!

Thanks to Kris Mamaghani, Mrs. Reyonlds, and Coach K for the great organization of field day!  So sorry that the weather did not cooperate, but thank you for your flexibility and understanding!  This day would not happen without so many great volunteers!!  Pre-K-2nd grades will be on Monday, and 3rd-5th + MOID/MID will be on Tuesday!  Please be sure that your children wear sunscreen and sneakers!

And, please save the date!  Registration is planned for Wednesday, August 3, from 7:30-11:30am.  On this day, you will turn in your proof of residency to ensure that DES is the school that your child is zoned for, get carpool numbers and information on bus routes, purchase spirit wear, pay PTO requested funds, meet your child's teacher, and drop off school supplies to the room.  All who pay the requested $35 in Annual Dues may also pick up their official DES Stem shirt!  This shirt can be worn as spirit wear, on STEM days, and is requested to be worn on field trips for safety purposes.  Again this year, we will offer a Fastpass to those families who have paid the requested $150 to the Tiger Fund prior to Registration Day!  The Fastpass will allow families to proceed to designated lines!  More information on this will be available in Tiger Talk coming out in mid-July!

Thanks so much for making 2015-16 such a great year!  Enjoy a safe, happy, relaxing summer with your friends and family!
