From the PTO Co-Presidents

Teacher Appreciation week was a huge success! Thank you to the Staff Appreciation chairs, Kim Rivera and Terica Harleaux, for organizing wonderful events all week long! Also, thank you to the all of the students that took the time to say a special thank you to their teachers.

Our Spring Book Fair runs Tuesday through Thursday this week. Thank you to our Book Fair Committee Chairs, Kimi Lenertz and Kimberly Kirkland for organizing this great event. We'd also like to thank all of the volunteers that help set-up and run the Book Fair. Please see below for additional information and we hope to see you there.
In addition, please join us on Thursday, March 17 at 5pm for our PTO General Membership Meeting where we will present the slate of officers for the 2016-2017 PTO Executive Committee. Immediately following the meeting is our Cultural Arts Dinner and Talent Expedition. Thank you our Cultural Awareness Chairs, Sirisha Ganduri and Kathy Mealy for taking us on a trip around the world within DES.
We end a very busy week with All Pro Dad on Friday at 6:45am. Thank you to Chris Wilburn for organizing these great family friendly events. We hope you can join us!

Please sign up to volunteer at the Book Fair!
Book Fair is open this week (March 15-17)  - Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 7:00-7:45 am and 2:30-5:30 pm, with extended hours on Thursday to 7:30 pm.
Book Fair is a huge fundraiser for DES, it can not happen without Volunteers!

We have shifts open Tuesday (3/15) and Wednesday (3/16) afternoons, and Thursday late afternoon into evening during Cultural Event.

Your child can help you work, you can log your volunteer hours, get the best of both worlds by working Book Fair and participating in Cultural parents in the DES community. Picking your child up from After-School? Stay an hour and volunteer for Book Fair!

Heritage Lunch Day
What's a Heritage Lunch?

Everyone has a heritage!
Let's celebrate it!
  • On Thursday, March 17, all students are encouraged to pack a lunch including their favorite foods from their heritage!
  • Discover more about your heritage and celebrate our cultural differences!
  • Learn about foods from other cultures through asking guided questions during lunchtime! (Remember, don't share food.)

Cultural Arts Dinner and Talent Exhibition

Mark your calendars and join us for our Cultural Arts Dinner and Talent Exhibition on Thursday, March 17, from 5 to 8pm. The Book Fair will be open that night, too.

Please also plan to make and share your favorite family dish for our potluck dinner. Use the link below to sign up to bring an appetizer, side dish, main course or dessert. Drop off your dishes in the school cafeteria between 5 and 5:15pm. Dinner will begin at 5:30 and last until 6:15, followed by our talent exhibition at 6:30.

DES Dads, please come to our All Pro Dad Breakfast this month.
Friday, March 18 - 6:45 to 7:45am.
Please arrive for breakfast in the cafeteria (6:45 - 7:15am)
Program will begin in the media center at 7:20.
This month's topic is "Being Brave"
All Pro Dad Dad's Day is a simple idea with a profound impact. It's a one-hour monthly breakfast held before school where fathers and their children meet with other dads and kids in the school cafeteria. During this time, we will discuss a wide range of family topics, spend time together, create fun memories, and leave equipped with resources to strengthen your relationship with your child.
The program is fun and free! All you need to do is attend, and if you want to purchase breakfast, you may do so in the cafeteria by using your child's myschoolbucks account, cash or check ($1.65 adults, $1.20 children). If you do not have a myschoolbucks account, please register for one at before the meeting.
To help with keeping the parking lot and carpool drop off running smoothly, please park at GA Perimeter College and walk over to school.
Please visit our chapter website for dates and more information. or contact Chris Wilburn at:

DES Kindergarten Roundup

Attention parents of rising Kindergarten students
Kindergarten Roundup at Dunwoody Elementary School is taking place on Thursday, March 31
Join us at the school with your child from 8:00 - 10:00am.
Parents will be able to pick up pre-registration packets, hear about the kindergarten program, and participate in a Parents Panel with DES parents of current kindergarten students.
Rising K children will participate in classroom visits and activities.  Please plan on arriving promptly at 8:00am and staying until 10:00am for this program.  At the conclusion of the program, families will be offered the opportunity to take an abbreviated tour of DES.

*Current Pre-K students will participate in an orientation at a future date.

Action Ministries
Feed the Hungry Foundation

Dunwoody Elementary will team up with Action Ministries - Feed the Hungry Foundation in an effort to feed children in a nearby county that have been identified as not having enough to eat.  Without our help, these children would only receive one meal a day - the meal that they receive from their school lunchroom cafeteria.

Our school can help by collecting food items that make up a healthy part of their diet.  In order to avoid adding to obesity, Action Ministries has teamed up with a hospital dietician, and have requested only certain items to be collected:

* Individual Cereal Packets
* Fruit cups
* Cup O Soup (instant soup mixes)
* Libby's Sweet Corn or other veggie envelopes
* Ramen Noodles
* Instant mac-n-cheese packs
* Campbell's Chicken Soup
* Instant Oatmeal envelopes

Selected students will receive a backpack with these items pre-bagged.

We are not required to bag or sort -
Just Collect.....
Thanks, Lynn Johnston

School Store Volunteers Needed

The children LOVE it and we hate to turn them away if we don't have the volunteers to staff it. It's also a great way to get in your volunteer hours before the work days starts!

The school store is open from 7:10 - 7:40am on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the cafeteria.

You can sign up at the following link:

If you have any questions about the day or time, or what to do if you're new, please do not hesitate to ask!
